Not Dead Yet: The Memoir, by Phil Collins

Phil Collins pulls no punches—about himself, his life, or the ecstasy and heartbreak that’s inspired his music. In his much-awaited memoir, Not Dead Yet, he tells the story of his epic career, with an auspicious debut at age 11 in a crowd shot from the Beatles’ legendary film A Hard Day’s Night. A drummer since almost before he could walk, Collins received on the job training in the seedy, thrilling bars and clubs of 1960s swinging London before finally landing the drum seat in Genesis. Soon, he would step into the spotlight on vocals after the departure of Peter Gabriel and begin to stockpile the songs that would rocket him to international fame with the release of Face Value and “In the Air Tonight.” Whether he’s recalling jamming with Eric Clapton and Robert Plant, pulling together a big band fronted by Tony Bennett, or writing the music for Disney’s smash-hit animated Tarzan, Collins’s storytelling chops never waver. And of course he answers the pressing question on everyone’s mind: just what does “Sussudio” mean?

Not Dead Yet is Phil Collins’s candid, witty, unvarnished story of the songs and shows, the hits and pans, his marriages and divorces, the ascents to the top of the charts and into the tabloid headlines. As one of only three musicians to sell 100 million records both in a group and as a solo artist, Collins breathes rare air, but has never lost his touch at crafting songs from the heart that touch listeners around the globe. That same touch is on magnificent display here, especially as he unfolds his harrowing descent into darkness after his “official” retirement in 2007, and the profound, enduring love that helped save him. This is Phil Collins as you’ve always known him, but also as you’ve never heard him before.

Not Drowning but Waving

Or: my beginnings, my childhood and how my relationship with my dad was a bit tidal

We think mums and dads know it all. But in fact they’re making it up as they go along. Every day, busking it, winging it, putting on a brave—sometimes false—face. It’s something I suspect throughout my childhood, yet it’s only confirmed in adulthood, and only with a little help from the Other Side.

One gray autumn evening in 1977, I go to see a medium. She lives in Victoria, central London, round the insalubrious back of Buckingham Palace, in a flat near the top of a tower block. It’s no gypsy caravan, but I suppose it does mean she’s nearer the heavens.

I don’t have a particular affinity for spirits—that will come much, much later, and be less an affinity than an addiction—but my wife, Andy, is somewhat that way inclined. My mum, too, is no stranger to the Ouija board. At our family home on London’s suburban western edges, my mum, nana and auntie, along with my so-called uncles Reg and Len, enjoyed many a happy late-fifties and early-sixties evening summoning the dearly departed from beyond the veil. Better that than the meager monochrome offerings flickering from the newfangled television set.

The reason for my and Andy’s visit to this high-rise Madame Arcati: a naughty dog. Ben, our beautiful boxer, has a habit of dragging from under our bed a pile of electric blankets. We’re holding on to these for our kids—Joely, five, and Simon, one—for when they stop wetting the bed and need a bit of extra warmth. It has not dawned on me that the folded electric blankets promise more than a toasty bed—bent filaments can break and catch fire. Maybe Ben knows this.

Andy comes to the conclusion that there’s a supernatural element to Ben’s nightly ritual. He’s probably not clairvoyant but there’s clearly something we humans don’t know.

At this time I’m manically busy, touring with Genesis—we’ve released our album Wind & Wuthering and I have only recently taken over singing duties from Peter Gabriel. I am, accordingly, often an absent husband and father, so I feel perennially on the back foot when it comes to matters domestic and familial. I duly offer no opposition to this unorthodox course of action.

So off to a medium we go. Into bustling Victoria, up in the tower-block elevator, a ring on the doorbell, small talk with the husband, who’s watching Coronation Street. It couldn’t be any less spiritual. Finally he pulls himself away from the TV and gives me a nod: “She’ll see you now . . .”

She’s an ordinary-looking housewife, perched behind a small table. No sign of any other-worldly virtues. In fact she appears totally normal, in a matter-of-fact way. This completely throws and somewhat disappoints me, and my skepticism now comes with a topspin of confusion, and just a shade of grumpiness.

As Andy’s I Ching readings have informed her that it’s the spirits on my side of the family that are the dog-botherers, I draw the short straw and enter the chamber of the supernatural. Through gritted teeth I tell the medium about Ben’s nightly antics. She nods gravely, closes her eyes, waits for a meaningful length of time, then finally replies, “It’s your dad.”

“Pardon?”

“Yes, it’s your dad and he wants you to have a few things: his watch, his wallet, the family cricket bat. Do you want me to ask his spirit to speak through me? Then you could hear his voice. But sometimes the spirits don’t want to leave and that becomes a bit awkward.”

I splutter a no. Communication with my father wasn’t at its best when he was alive. Talking to him now, nearly five years after his death at Christmas 1972, via a middle-aged housewife in a disconcertingly drab domestic setting in a tower block in the heart of London, would just be weird.

“Well, he says to give your mum some flowers, and to tell her he’s sorry.”

Of course, being a fairly rational twenty-six-year-old who likes things to be down-to-earth and regimented—I am a drummer, after all—I should have discounted this as mumbo-jumbo con-artistry. But I agree that our dog habitually dragging electric blankets from beneath our bed is behavior possibly not of the mortal plain. On top of that, Madame Arcati has said some things about my dad that she couldn’t possibly have known, not least that stuff about the cricket bat. That cricket bat has been part of the Collins clan’s meager sports equipment for as long as I can remember. Outside the family, no one would know about it. I wouldn’t say I’m convinced, but I am intrigued. Andy and I depart the anteroom of the afterlife and re-enter the real world. Back on terra firma I tell her the news. She replies with a look understood on both sides of the veil: “I told you so.”

The next day I phone my mum and relate the previous evening’s events. She is blithely spirited, and unsurprised by both the message and the medium.

“I bet he wants to give me flowers,” she says, half laughing, half harrumphing.

This is when she tells me everything. My dad, Greville Philip Austin Collins, was not a faithful husband to my mum, June Winifred Collins (née Strange). Having been recruited at the age of nineteen, he was a lifelong employee, like his father before him, of the London Assurance Company in the City of London. “Grev” had used his quotidian, bowler-hatted, nine-to-five suburban commuter’s existence to maintain a secret life with an office girlfriend.

Dad was not a particularly obvious heart-throb or lady’s man. He was a little tubby round the middle, and his RAF mustache topped off his patchy head of hair. I got all my looks from my mum, clearly.

But it seems that behind that mild-mannered insurance-man exterior lurked something more Lothario-shaped. Mum tells me about a particular incident. Alma Cole was a lovely lady who worked with my mum in the toyshop she managed on behalf of a family friend. Alma was from the north of England and there was always a conspiratorial tone to whatever she said.

She and my mum were close, and one day a slightly miffed Alma sniffed, “I saw you with Grev in the car on Saturday and you didn’t wave back to me.”

“I wasn’t in the car with him on Saturday!” The passenger, patently, was Dad’s lady friend, being taken for a romantic spin in our black Austin A35.

Now, nearly five years after Dad’s passing, while I find it wonderful that my mum is confiding in me in this manner, hearing these revelations makes me simultaneously mad and sad. I now know that my parents’ marriage didn’t so much dissolve as fizzle out, partly due to my dad being, shall we say, distracted elsewhere. His infidelity was very much news to me.

But why wouldn’t it be? I was a very young boy back then and, to me, my parents seemed deliriously happy. Life at home had appeared normal and quite calm. Straightforward, simple. To my mind, Mum and Dad were happily in love for all their long married life.

But I am very much the baby of the family, almost seven years younger than my sister, Carole, and nine years younger than my brother, Clive. Certain, grown-up aspects of home life would have gone straight over my head. Now, when I consider the facts before me this evening in 1977, I think I can divine an undercurrent of unrest in the house, something to which I was completely oblivious at the time. That said, perhaps I felt it in my water: I was a chronic bed-wetter to an embarrassingly old age.

When I later relay this earth-shattering news to Clive, he gives it to me straight. All those sudden long walks I was taken on by my siblings? Those lazy, hazy strolls past the post-war prefab housing on Hounslow Heath with my brother and sister? Not the cheerfully nondescript norm of a simple late-fifties and early-sixties suburban English childhood. In fact I was being unwittingly complicit in the papering over of cracks.

My father acting a little fast and loose with his marriage vows is something I still have trouble coming to terms with. His disregard for my mum’s feelings is beyond me. And before anyone steps forward to state, “That’s a bit rich coming from you, Collins,” let the record show: I hear what you’re saying.

I am disappointed that I have been married three times. I’m even more disappointed that I have been divorced three times. I am considerably less bothered by the fact that these resulted in settlements with my ex-wives to the order of £42 million. Nor am I fussed that those sums were widely reported and are widely known. In this day and age, nothing is private anymore. The internet has seen to that. Additionally, while three divorces might seem to suggest a casual attitude toward the whole idea of marriage, this couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m a romantic who believes, hopes, that the union of marriage is something to cherish and last.

Yet certainly that trio of divorces demonstrates a failure to coexist happily and to understand my partners. It suggests a failure to become, and to stay, a family. It shows failure, full stop. Over the decades I’ve done my diligent best to make every aspect of my life, personal and professional, work like clockwork—although too often, I have to acknowledge that my “best” just hasn’t been good enough.

Still, I know what “normal” is—it’s in my DNA; I grew up with it, or at least the semblance thereof, in the London suburbs—and that’s what I strove for while trying to make a living playing music.

I have endeavored to be honest with all my children about my personal history. It involves them. It affects them. They live with the consequences of my actions, inactions and reactions every day of their lives. I try to be as straight and forthright as it’s possible to be. I will do the same throughout this story, even in the parts where I don’t exactly come out smelling of roses. As a drummer I’m used to giving it some stick. I’ve had to become used to taking some stick, too.

However, to return to my mum: her stoicism, strength and humor in the face of my dad’s straying (to use that very English word) says a lot about a wartime generation who would go through thick and thin to maintain their marriage commitments. It’s something we all could learn from, myself very much included.

All that said: when I consider my childhood from the vantage point of my advanced age, perhaps close-to-the-bone emotional upset and turmoil seeped into my young self, without my even knowing it.

I was born in Putney Maternity Hospital, southwest London, on January 30, 1951, a belated—and by all accounts surprise—third child to June and Grev Collins. Apparently Mum initially entered West Middlesex Hospital to have me, but they weren’t very nice to her, so she crossed her legs, left and headed to Putney.

I was the first “London” child, as both Carole and Clive had been born in Weston-super-Mare after the entire family had been relocated there by London Assurance prior to the Blitz. Carole was not best pleased by my birth. She’d wanted a girl. Clive, though, was over the moon—finally, a little brother to play football with, wrestle with and, when all that got a bit boring, to pin down and torture with his smelly socks.

With Mum and Dad aged thirty-seven and forty-five respectively, my arrival made them, for the times, old parents. This didn’t bother my mum in the slightest. She remained a generous and loving woman her entire life, without a bad word for anybody until the day she died on her birthday in 2011, aged ninety-eight. That said, she did once call a London policeman a “dickhead” when he chastised her for driving in a bus lane.

Dad, born in 1907, came from then-fashionable Isleworth, a riverside neighborhood on London’s western edges. His family home was big, dark, musty, quite imposing, not a little scary. Ditto his relatives. I have no recollection of my paternal grandfather, a time-served London Assurance man just like his son would become. But I do have vivid memories of Grandma. She was warm, embracing and very patient with me, but seemed stuck in the Victorian period, and as if to prove it was permanently clad in long black dresses. Maybe she was still mourning Prince Albert, too.

She and I were very close. I spent a lot of time in her constantly damp below-stairs rooms, watching her paint watercolors of boats and the river, an enthusiasm I’ve inherited.

Dad’s sister, Auntie Joey, was a formidable woman, armed with a cigarette holder and a rough throaty voice, a little like the baddie in Disney’s The Rescuers: “Dahling, doooo come in . . .” Her husband, Uncle Johnny, was also a case. He had a monocle and always wore heavy tweed suits, another Collins from the land that the twentieth century forgot.

Family history has it that a couple of Dad’s cousins had been incarcerated by the Japanese in the notorious Changi Prison in Singapore. Great store was put by them—they were war heroes, men who survived the pitiless Far East campaign. Another cousin was apparently the chap who first brought launderettes to England. In Dad’s family’s eyes, they were all, each of them, “somebody.” Or, in other words, toffs. H. G. Wells was said to be a regular caller on the Collins household.

Clearly Dad’s family formed his attitudes, not to mention his working life—although after he died I discovered that he had tried to dodge conscription into London Assurance by running away to become a merchant seaman. But the ocean-going rebellion was short-lived and he was told to snap out of it, pull himself together and fall in line under the insurance-salesman yoke imposed by his own father. Conformity was the order of the day. With this in mind, it could be suggested that Dad was a little bit jealous of the freedom the sixties offered Clive, Carole and myself in our chosen fields: cartoonist, ice skater, musician. Call them proper jobs? Dad didn’t.

There’s little proof that Grev Collins ever got used to the twentieth century. When North Sea gas came on stream and all the boilers in the U.K. were converted, Dad tried to bribe the Gas Board to leave us out of the conversions, convinced that somewhere there was a gasholder that would provide fuel just for the Collins family.

World class talent, world class book
By violentfemmebot
Phil Collins is a curious case. Like his fellow former Genesis bandmate, Steve Hackett, he is grossly underrecognized for his talent and vast contributions to rock music. Unlike Steve Hackett, he is an A++-list star whose name and music is known by nearly all, young and old. Yet, when you ask the average person who Phil Collins is, the association is usually one of his smaltzy ballads or, perhaps as part of Patrick Bateman's 'American Psycho' threesome soundtrack. In a fate arguably worse than Hackett's relative anonymity, he is quite well known - but as a PUNCHLINE. Many people don't even know he was a drummer (and one of the very best in the world, at that!)

"Not Dead Yet" is a valiant attempt by Phil to put his reputation back in a proper, respectable light. His resume, achievements and experiences are mindblowing. Understandably, he would like us to remember him thus. After all, he has worked very, VERY hard to earn these things, as will become quite apparent to the reader early on. Phil Collins is no slouch and has an incredible work ethic. As a drummer alone, he has influenced MULTITUDES of musicians, from Neil Peart to Vinny Paul to Kanye West to Alex Van Halen to Jason Bonham to Mike Portnoy and on and on and on. So if it seems like he is being a bit "braggy" at times, remember where he is coming from and how few people outside the musical sphere have really acknowledged him for his accomplishments.

Collins sprinkles plenty of humor and hilarious anecdotes throughout 'Not Dead Yet,' creating a seamless, entertaining journey from his childhood to early career in Genesis to '80s/'90s superstardom to his more recent struggles for the reader that's both informative and bittersweet. No matter how you feel about Phil when you pick up the book, you are almost guaranteed to like him when you finish. There are NO boring moments

The book is written in a witty, breezy yet informative style and is quite hard to put down. It is easy to see why so many musicians from so many backgrounds (from Brian Eno to Tommy Bolin to Sting to Adele to Eric Clapton to Robert Plant + so so many others) wanted to work with him. In addition to his talent, he has an affable charm, a quick wit and a very open mind with regards to music. He has the ability to laugh at himself and some of his best-known blunders (such as the 1985 Live Aid Led Zeppelin reunion debacle, which he will give a through account of).

At the same time, Phil Collins is a formidable perfectionist, perhaps harder on himself than any critic could ever be. He takes his job as a musician very seriously, and you can tell that any missteps such as the Led Zep incident eat at him tremendously. For instance, his finger slips on a piano key during his Live Aid performance of "Against All Odds," which he describes as a "bum note that's heard around the world." But if you YouTube the performance, this "clanger," while perceptible, (especially given his brief 'oh sh!t!' smirk immediately after), is actually pretty subtle and would be easy to miss if you weren't actively listening for it. The performance is positively stunning overall, especially vocally.

Another aspect of the book I really liked is that Phil focuses more on his musical career than on his personal life. Many musicians gloss over the actual nuts and bolts of their craft in favor of maximizing the salacious "sex, drugs & rock'n'roll" bits for gossip-inclined readers, but Phil is a musician first and foremost. Because he is such an entertaining narrator, this is by no means boring (I split my sides at the mental image of PC stripping down to his "graying Y-fronts" and diving into Peter Gabriel's parents' fancy swimming pool during his 1970 Genesis audition). Even if you already know everything about his career, you are sure to love the great stories he has to tell along the way.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone. Regardless of whether you are a Phil Collins fan or not, you are sure to love his story and gain new respect for this man, his career, and the multitudes of musicians he has touched.

Pretty entertaining...
By lifeisgood
Fun, interesting and honest account of events directly from the seemingly unfiltered mind of this iconic musician. Worth reading if into the curious life of entertainers and how the world was before social media.

Still seems like a nice bloke.
By David Lindsay
This is an enjoyable book; it provides a summary of Phil’s music career and family life. Phil comes across as hard working, ambitious, and likable. He does not use the book to settle many scores and has good things to say about most of the people he runs into. Since the 1980s has rubbed shoulders with rock’s aristocracy and the British Royal Family. Phil has a lot of friends and they all seem to be nice people. However, he does complain about Led Zeppelin at Live Aid and claims that Plant and Page were to blame for the band's disastrous performance . He also moans about Dustin Hoffman and finds Paul McCartney a bit condescending.

Phil was a superstar in the 1980s and remains one of just three singers – along with Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney – to sell over 100 million albums as both a solo artist and as part of a band. Phil has worked with some famous musicians over the years including Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Pete Townsend, Robert Fripp, Sting, John Martyn, and David Crosby. As a drummer, Phil has played everything from big band music to R&B. I was a fan of Genesis and Phil's fusion band Brand X in the 1970s. Personally, I wanted to know more about the music and the players he admires. Unfortunately, he does not go into too much detail. The book could also have done with an index.

Phil has been married three times and has five children but he is honest about his failings as a husband and father. He also became an alcoholic but seems to have left that behind him. The memoir is well written and he still seems relatively normal.

Corrie ten Boom's Prison Letters, by Corrie Ten Boom

Prison Letters is a collection of these very letters that have miraculously survived to this day. Here are the actual writings of Corrie and her sister Betsie from the concentration camp...the emotion-filled letters they received from relatives and friends on the outside...snatches of a diary recorded by Betsie..Corrie's perceptive sketches of prison life smuggled out of the camp by a sympathetic soldier-all containing precious lessons of faith and love learned in God's training school. It was only recently that Corrie herself re-read these moving letters, an experience which resurrected many paintful memories for her. But with the sadness came the conviction that God wanted her to share these writings so that others could experience the same faith that guided her through a time of trial and triumph.

Incredible Letters, spiritual and inspiring, wonderful primary source
By Clare Chu
This book is a collection of letters that Corrie and her sister Betsie wrote while imprisoned by the occupying Germans in Holland for aiding Jews. They are full of faith yet give the real grimy details of prison life. There were also scraps of paper that Corrie wrote about her surrounding and snippets of a diary that Betsie kept. The two women appreciated every blessing from God and kept their faces turned to God while others around them sunk into despair. Even though they endured constant deprivations, hunger, illness, hard labor and unfair treatment, they kept their eyes on Jesus Christ, and trusted in God's purpose and plan for their lives. It may sound trite, but not when you're in the middle of a brutal concentration camp where people get shot because the guard is having a bad day. These letters were smuggled out of the prison in Vught by a sympathetic soldier and handed to Corrie's sister Nollie who kept every scrap of paper. It was only lately in Corrie's life that she was moved to reread these letters and the painful memories. But knowing that God had a purpose for preserving these writings she decided to publish them so that others can share in the precious lessons of love and faith that sustained them through their ordeal.

Realize the great blessings of free America
By none
As always, Corrie and her family inspire us to realize the great blessings we have been given for so many years and also help us to know we could loose those blessings and freedoms if we are not careful. Tyrants like Hitler have poisoned many strong societies through out history and if it happened to them it could happen to us. We must remember that the united many is always stronger than the privileged few. After reading many or her books it is apparent that the Nazi's feared that power so much that they felt it necessary to starve their prisoners to weaken that enormous power of the many. I hope Americans will always be willing to stand up against evil.

Content is a treasure

Seller sold as new, however, that would be correct if this was 1975 per the printing page. Fortunately the book is in good condition but shame on the seller for listing an old item as new. On a truthful note, Ms Ten Boom was an amazing woman and a wonderful role model as a Christian. I was honored to have met her as a child but now as an adult I'm learning more about her. You will be blessed by her message. I recommend all her books.....old or new. 3 stars is for the seller not the 5 star book.

Very good book for Geodesign
By WV Consumer
Since ESRI has released 90% of the material on Geodesign (this book is technically from ESRI press, too), it is refreshing to see Geodesign explained instead of reading another PR booklet from ESRI. It is a good jumping off point for reasearch into Geodesign, Planning, or Geovisualization.

HOW TO TAKE REVENGE ON A NARCISSIST: Take your power back

Written from the perspective of Leyla Loric, a biologist and Richard Grannon, a psychologist, "How to Take Revenge on a Narcissist" is a multi layered take on what it is like to be the victim of narcissistic abuse, the invisible scars it leaves and the crippling desire for vengeance and closure that infects the target long after the narc has moved on to fresh prey. A manual full of practical tips, tricks and tactics that teaches how to get inside the mechanics of the narc psyche to cause maximum angst to the predator.

Learn practical research-based strategies that empower you to either take revenge or through understanding find the strength to disengage across a variety of contexts and objectives.

Not every narcissist will be an ex lover, sometimes it could be a boss, family member or just some irritating dimwit at work who cant shut up. This book covers a spectrum of contexts and needs from outing a narcissists true nature in a court room, to a cutting put-down in a bar.

Whilst this book handles a serious subject, every effort has been made to lighten the darkness and to use humour to give some healthier options of response. Whether you choose (as a mature, responsible grown up) to use it as an actual guidebook for vengeful action, an exercise in angry fantasizing or as a means of just letting go, this book is a sincere effort by two people who have experienced narcissistic abuse to bring peace to the victims of this horrible, potentially life destroying disorder.

It helps me deal with the narc in my life!
By Yumi
I was initially going to rate this as a 4, because of the aforementioned reasons from other reviewers (some of the text boxes and charts don't function well, and you have to keep pressing an arrow to get the last one or two words. Either that or just guess from the context). I also thought that $10 for a 72 page kindle book was a bit much, BUT because I've gained SO much from Mr.Grannon's YouTube videos through the SpartanLifeCoach channel and his products that it's worth it for me (the value of his videos and products FAR surpasses the costs, because he gives you so much stuff and it's high quality - and by quality, I mean substance. Most people whose products I actually want are so expensive I just don't have the funds). With that said, when I put my mouse over the stars, the words said "4 stars = I like it" and "5 stars = I love it." If it's about my personal opinion, I'm gonna be honest. I love it, and here's why:

1) it gave me new information. I didn't know that stuff about oxytocin and how it can actually be a detriment in some ways
2) it gave me tips on how to deal with my (soon-to-be) ex-husband who I share a child with
3) it also helped me see some of the psychology behind narcs, because I could NEVER understand why my narc husband could be so cruel or so entitled. I'd always had good romantic relationships with people in my past where there was mutual trust and respect, so for the longest time, I couldn't understand why I felt so badly in that one
4) the authors also give you a link for people who "need help defining the abusive pattern and possible co-morbid personality disorders" so that they can reach out to and contact the authors. This was the most valuable part of the book for me. Obviously, they're human beings who have lives and businesses to run, so I wouldn't latch onto them and take too much of their time, but it's nice to get an opinion from two people who have been dealing with this niche topic.

A big thanks to both Ms.Loric and Mr.Grannon for helping me shed more light to this area of my life and giving me sound, concrete advice!

UPDATE: I got a message from Ms.Loric. Apparently they have changed the format so that you can see the charts and text boxes clearly now (I personally can't check it on my kindle - I assume it's because once you buy the book, it doesn't get updated or anything).

A first class book! An absolute must-read.
By Breakthrough Moment
The book gives you all the tools to hold the mirror up to the narcissist without having to defile one's own soul. It is a very classy, high level approach to revenge. It is the ultimate vindication. Its message absolutely sublime! The premise of the book is rooted in ancient wisdom and traditions that teach us how to overcome adversity through strength over self versus power over others; a truth that has eluded many. It is so effortless to achieve dominion over oneself. All it takes is self-control, the ability to withhold, and that you resist the urge to react. It is so easy to let silence fill the air; silence as the ultimate weapon of choice. Less is more. The more enigmatic and mysterious you are, the less your enemy has to glom onto.

This guide to truth, honor and wisdom gives you step for step the confidence building tools you need to be mentally, emotionally and physically prepared to counter the narcissist in a non-confrontational, non-oppositional, constructive manner. This must-read page-turner, with nuggets of truth and gems of wisdom on every page, gives you a path to healing the injury to your damaged soul, the very essence of your being. The intention and purpose of the book is to provide narcissism survivors with the proper skills and strategies to restore their severely impaired self-esteem, dignity and self-worth. It is the ultimate path to self-redemption.

We owe a debt of gratitude to both authors. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for the good works that you do. Thank you Ms. Loric and Mr. Grannon for writing this wonderful book!

Sincerely,
Breakthrough Moment

Responsible Respect
By Joanna J.
If you want to experience responsible respect for that unique blend of fury and despair the narcissist in your life inspires, read HOW TO TAKE REVENGE ON A NARCISSIST. No other book on this subject gets to the heart of the matter as quickly and effectively as Loric and Grannon do here. And if the title should give you pause, remember this: narcissists enjoy your misery, which means your fast recovery would likely be one of the worst things you could ever do to them. That core understanding having been "baked into the cake" by the compassionate--and funny!--authors makes this one post-breakup treat you can binge on without remorse.

Named a Best Book of the Year by Amazon.com and the Washington Post

Three years ago, Pulitzer Prize–winner Chris Hedges and award-winning cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco set out to take a look at the sacrifice zones, those areas in America that have been offered up for exploitation in the name of profit, progress, and technological advancement. They wanted to show in words and drawings what life looks like in places where the marketplace rules without constraints, where human beings and the natural world are used and then discarded to maximize profit. Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is the searing account of their travels.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, June 2012: From the dusty plains of North Dakota to the coal-veined hills of West Virginia to the desolate and ravaged streets of Camden N.J., Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges and award-winning cartoonist/journalist Joe Sacco introduce us to the nation's "sacrifice zones"--those regions where, in the authors' view, corporate greed has run wild, and the locals have suffered. A unique mashup of investigative journalism, man-on-the-street reportage, graphic novel, and anti-corporate manifesto, the result is a riveting and often chilling account of America's forgotten zones. The balance between Hedges' narrative nonfiction storytelling and Sacco's intimate and very human sketches is surprisingly effective. And the stark depictions (both written and visual) of abandoned coal mines and empty downtowns and crumbling houses are heartbreaking, as are the stories of people struggling to survive. This is a special and important book. --Neal Thompson

Review
“Sacco’s sections are uniformly brilliant. The tone is controlled, the writing smart, the narration neutral…. This is an important book.”
—New York Times Book Review

“An unabashedly polemic, angry manifesto that is certain to open eyes, intensify outrage and incite argument about corporate greed…. Through immersion reportage and graphic narrative, the duo illuminate the human and environmental devastation in those communities, with the warning that no one is immune…. A call for a new American revolution, passionately proclaimed.”
—Kirkus (Starred Review)

“[Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt] is, without question, the most profoundly disquieting (and downright shocking) portrait of modern America in recent years, and one that is essential reading for anyone wanting to comprehend the quotidian struggle of what sociologists called ‘the underclass’. To describe the book as Dickensian in its horror-show reports of frontline industrial decrepitude and socio-economic dysfunction is to engage in understatement… Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is unapologetically combative and profoundly J’accuse. And though many a conservative think-tanker could try to punch holes in its arguments no one can remain unmoved or unsettled by its brilliantly documented reportage from the precipice of a society that prefers to turn a blind eye to its nightmarish underside.”
—The Times (Saturday Review)

“[B]rilliant combination of prose and graphic comics."
—Ralph Nader

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (Nation) is as moving a portrait of poverty and as compelling a call to action as Michael Harrington's ‘The Other America,’ published in 1962.”
—Boston Globe

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a gripping and thoroughly researched polemic.”
—Grantland

“[A] growling indictment of corporate America.”
—Financial Times

“…a unique hybrid of investigative journalism, graphic novel and polemic.”
—Denver Post

“…a heartfelt, harrowing picture of post-capitalist America.”
—Guardian (UK)

“The book is a primer for every American who is overwhelmed by the uncertainty of the stock market, who wonders where America's muscle went, and how much heavy lifting our kids will face.”
—Seattle Times

“The tales therein—both the intimate personal ones and the big sociopolitical ones—are as unsettling as they are impossible to put down.”
—Philadelphia Weekly

“Eloquently written and embellished by spare, desolate drawings from Joe Sacco, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is accessible and deeply uncomfortable.”
—Metro (UK)

“…provides close accounts of some of the country's most devastated communities, "sacrifice zones." It ends with a detailed history of the Occupy protests and a declaration that "the mighty can fall.”
—Associated Press

“[B]rilliant.”
—The Capital Times

"Days of Destruction is a riveting indictment of America’s failures.”
—Portland Monthly

“This searing indictment of our unsustainable society is unsettling. To keep our chance for dignity, we must do our part to champion the organizers and whistleblowers, committee members and protesters. Amen. Pass the word.”
—Brooklyn Rail

"[H]arrowing descriptions…. Hedges tells the story, not only of the people but of the town, and despite the differences in setting, certain similarities show through: poverty, addiction, violence; but more than that, a long series of broken promises and mounting despair. Sacco illustrates these chapters with his distinctive, careful line drawings…. [A]n excellent piece of journalism -- engaging, troubling, and in its own way, beautiful.”
—TowardFreedom.com

“As quixotic as the quest may seem, Days of Destruction brings the rhetoric and the reality into a nobler focus after a very disturbing tour.”
—The Star-Ledger (New Jersey)

"It's rare that a book carries so much courage and conviction, forcing reflection and an urge to immediately rectify the problems."
—Bookslut

“A powerful social and political exploration.”
—Midwest Book Review/California Bookwatch

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a journey through contemporary American misery and what can be done to change the course, interpreted through the eyes of two of today’s most relevant literary journalists…. The graphics illustrate what words alone cannot, capturing a past as it’s told, where there’s no longer anything left to photograph.”
—Asbury Park Press

“[T]he radical disjunction between how Hedges and Sacco approach their subjects is fascinating and instructive. Hedges is at ease with the grand, sweeping Howard Zinn–moments of matchbook history…. And if sweeping, historical connect-the-dots is your cup of tea, then you will find Hedges deeply moving. But if, like Sacco, you distrust all history that does not have a face, a name, and a voice behind it, you will find more to call you to action in the voices that speak from the decimated landscapes of America’s deepest poverty, which we (like Dickens’s “telescopic philanthropists”) know even less well than we do the sufferings of peoples halfway around the world. Together, Sacco and Hedges might just have created a form that can speak across divides unbridgeable without the supplement of graphic narrative.”
—Public Books

“…a bleak, fist-shaking look at the effects of global capitalism in the United States.”
—Joe Gross, Austin American-Statesman

“This is a book that should warm the hearts of political activists such as Naomi Klein or the nonagenerian Pete Seeger. And cause apoplexy among the Tea Party and its fellow travellers…. Sure, it's a polemic, but it's a polemic with a human face.”
—Globe and Mail (Canada)

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a harrowing account of the exploited American underclass…. It is their stories that shape Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt to be a mesmeric indictment of an America that has failed its populace…. From the title alone it is evident that neither Hedges nor Sacco remain objective or shy away from the palpable condemnation of capitalism and the American government. Regardless, they develop an accurate account of the despondency that plagues and divides American culture. This is an imperative read in an era where widespread economic depression and grief reign supreme…. Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is powerful and remarkable, arguably one of the best publications of the year.”
—PopMatters.com

“This is an important book.”
—Winnipeg Free Press (Canada)

“It is a fascinating journey… This book hit me in the gut. It will move you to engage in battle.”
—Ed Garvey

“[R]ead Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt to know what is happening in this country.”
—Caffeinated Muslim

“… a scorching look at communities burned out not by foreign bombs but by American capitalism.”
—The Stranger (Seattle)

“When their narrative culminates in Zucotti Park, readers will feel just as outraged as the protesters portrayed on the page.”
—Barnes and Noble Review

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt examines how corruption and greed have shaped the history of the United States in an unfortunate way…. This is an excellent book for those who actually need a reason to revolt, and should be read by anyone seeking public office.”
—San Francisco/Sacramento Book Review

“Be prepared for an emotional experience without a happy ending. Be prepared to be defensive. Be prepared to be angry. Be prepared to be ashamed…. [T]he book is accompanied by sections that are a graphic novel approach to the individual stories of the real people interviewed in these zones of despair. What is so overpowering, and discussable, in these biographies is that they read as much like a confessional as they do a history…. Can there be anything more important to discuss?”
—Book Group Buzz, Booklist Online

“This is indeed an extraordinary, must read book.”
—OpEdNews.com

“This may well be the most important book of the century, and yet Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt barely scratches the surface of our reality. But even that small peek into the system is mind-numbing. This book has the potential to wake us up—really Wake Us Up—to what is happening. The question is this: once we recognize the size and strength of the enemy, will we be so intimidated that we roll over and play victim? Or will we take a stand when and where we can, in small ways, alone or together, to start taking down the behemoth?”
—Curled Up With a Good Book

Wow

Chris Hedges has a great capacity for evoking the misery and hopelessness that is increasingly common in this country. This is often a depressing book--but it is strongly based in reality. Periodically in the book there are--provided by Joe Sacco--illustrations and comic book depictions of the lives of the individuals profiled in the book.

In the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota, Hedges describes one of the poorest and most socially dysfunctional areas in the United States. Why are Pine Ridge residents in this predicament? Hedges finds the answer in the subduing of Indian resistance in the late 19th century. The basis for traditional Indian culture was wiped out, including the buffalo. The US government successfully used racist and murderous military violence to subdue native resistance. That violence included rape; Hedges quotes George Custer's chief of scouts as telling the historian Walter Camp that captured squaws in the 1868 raid on Washita were used as sex slaves. Custer selected one for himself. Custer was a big part of the US military operations designed to steal the Black Hills region from the Lakota Sioux. The Black Hills had been granted to the Indians by the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie but gold, coal and other minerals were soon discovered in the region. A great many avaricious white people flooded into the region. The US military soon went into operation to steal Black Hills for white economic interests. The US government suppressed Indian language and culture. They instituted elected reservation governments that were easily controlled by the US government. An example of these puppet governments is pointed to by Hedges: the Pine Ridge tribal council in the 70's under the thuggish, corrupt leadership of Dick Wilson, a man very friendly towards white economic interests wishing to exploit Indian land. Wilson was a violent enemy of the American Indian Movement.

Hedges profiles several Pine Ridge residents including people who have set themselves toward living constructive lives after years of destructive activities like alcoholism and gangs. According to Hedges, such people have gotten on the right path by participating in old Lakota rituals like sun dances and sweat lodges. Hedges writes that this rediscovering of roots has had a strong influence in helping Indians fight against the tendencies towards destructive lifestyles that Pine Ridge's poverty and hopelessness encourages.

The next chapter is about Camden New Jersey. Camden is almost exclusively inhabited by persons of color, mostly African Americans. The city's residents face bleak job prospects, the housing and infrastructure have long crumbled and crime, drugs and prostitution afflict the city. One of the people examined in this chapter--citing reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer and other newspapers-- is George Norcross III, the insurance magnate and a dominant force in state politics. The Camden County Democratic Party appears to be the most docile instrument utilized by Norcross's political machine. Camden itself has been under the control of an unelected state government board since it went bankrupt a decade ago. Norcross seems to exercise very substantial influence with this board. He is in the habit of threatening to destroy local and state government officials and politicians who cross him; he has been caught on tape doing so using very profane language. If they cross him, these politicians run the risk of compelling Norcross to use his substantial influence to try to defeat them at election time. While Camden's resident's deal with contaminated drinking water, crumbling infrastructure and a downsized police force, the politicians he supports make sure that tax dollars flow to him and his business allies through government contracts and millions of dollars in subsidies for urban renewal projects. Hedges writes that while Norcross is a Democrat, he is also an ally of New Jersey's Republican governor, Chris Christie.

The next chapter is about southern West Virginia. This region has been economically ravaged, experienced massive population flight and has many towns that are almost ghost communities. In this miserable environment, some residents have become drug addicts. Strip mining and mountain top removal mining seem to be the only thriving industries in the area but these create dreadful externalities. These operations spread toxic soot all over surrounding communities. Hedges examines the resistance of the town of Sylvester to the pollution sprayed upon it by a subsidiary of Massey Energy. This pollution severely contaminates the water supply, soil and air; the area is prone to high rates of cancer, respiratory ailments and other medical problems. Elderly people are predominant among Hedges's interviewees in this chapter. For example there are the elderly women active in the fight in Sylvester and the retired man refusing to bow to pressure to leave his ancestral property surrounded by mining operations. This retired man and another anti-mining activist, a woman in her early 40's, report being subjected to various acts of intimidation including drive by shootings, repeated vandalism to their property and killings of their pet dogs.

Next is Imoakalee Florida, a center of immigrant agricultural labor, mostly Latino. The immigrants are housed in horrible conditions; subjected to extremely low pay; back-breaking labor; and serious respiratory problems, acute pesticide poisoning and other aliments caused by exposure to pesticides like Methyl Bromide. It is not uncommon for these workers to be held in literal slavery, have their paychecks stolen and subjected to physical abuse. The legal system in Florida appears willing to prosecute cases of slavery but the immigrants are very afraid to come forward for obvious reasons. Hedges interviews activists from the Coalition of Imoakalee workers, a very impressive organization--he describes their struggle to secure a minimum level of decent conditions.

Hedges ends his book with a stop at Occupy New York's home base. He argues that the Occupy movement and historical figures--including Crazy Horse and Eastern European communist era dissidents--are models for resistance to the corporate tyranny that afflicts us. Hedges paints a vivid picture of the landscapes he and Sacco visit and the people they talk to. Sacco's illustrations are engaging.

"Grapes of Wrath" with annotation and pictures
By Janet M Hanson
Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" was seen to be a literary project that humanized the people ground down by the Great Depression. I would like to think that this book by Hedges and Sacco does the same, only it is not a story. It's what Hedges does best: it is reporting. Sacco's drawings are highly effective and I would like to think that they may bring thoughtful discussion about this topic to people who would not be likely to slog their way through an essay by Hedges, Chomsky or Henry Giroux.

I particularly like the inclusion of Pine Ridge because it implicitly illustrates how long America's habit of discarding inconvenient people has existed. But all of it is good.

IF you have never read Hedges expect to be discomfited. Sit with it and keep reading. Know that this may not represent your reality but it is real enough for too many people. In the back of your mind, in the dark of the night, do you fear that this reality will be the reality of your children and grandchildren? I certainly do.

And again, with out trying to and almost begrudgingly, Hedges demonstrates a deep spirituality and paints a manifestation of the best of Christianity though certainly not that which you will see illustrated all too often by people who would call themselves religious leaders.

Read it preparing to be challenged. I think this book AND I HOPE THIS BOOK will find it's way into various college and high school classrooms. It has the possibility to take many students beyond the read and regurgitate style of so many classrooms today.

IT'S KILLING ME to see this book take it on the chops for how well it translated to electronic media. I guess if you are in the decision phase of buying this book then I would say buy the real thing not the virtual model. The way the written content and the graphic content interfaces is very much an important part of this design. It's a cutting edge format. And it is unfortunate that that did not turn out to be a great consumer experience for those who plunked down the dollars for the e-model. It's well worth it...buy it as book. I may buy it to give to people. Just read it.

The History of the Church: From Christ to Constantine (Penguin Classics), by Eusebius

Eusebius's account is the only surviving historical record of the Church during its crucial first 300 years. Bishop Eusebius, a learned scholar who lived most of his life in Caesarea in Palestine, broke new ground in writing the History and provided a model for all later ecclesiastical historians. In tracing the history of the Church from the time of Christ to the Great Persecution at the beginning of the fourth century, and ending with the conversion of the Emperor Constantine, his aim was to show the purity and continuity of the doctrinal tradition of Christianity and its struggle against persecutors and heretics.

Brief Synopsis
By John
Eusebius lived in the late third and early fourth centuries in Caesarea Palestine. His History of the Church chronicles the time from Christ to the victory of Constantine over Licinius. He wrote in Greek, but this translation Latinizes the names. Eusebius covers the period of Jewish persecution in the early first millennium a.d.; goes through the succession of the bishops of Rome, Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem, etc.; gives the account of heretical movements; and gives numerous examples of Christian martyrs in times of persecution. In the back of this edition is an extensive "Who's Who in Eusebius" spanning some 88 pages. It is a very useful tool in the reading of The History of the Church. It may also prove a valuable quick reference in further studies on early Christianity. Eusebius's style allows him to extensively quote several authors and historians in the early first millennium. His ten books of The History of the Church are riddled with passages from Josephus, Origen, Philo, Hegesippus, and the like. Also, behind the Who's Who in Eusebius, are a few appendices. I would highly recommend reading the appendices B, C, and D before undertaking the body of the book. A brief knowledge of the Roman empire at the time and Christianity will greatly benefit the reader.

Required Reading For Anyone Interested in Christian History
By JustinK
This book is one of the foundational works of Christian history. It was the first extensive, systematic attempt to present Christian history up till the author's time (4th century). In the centuries following the work of Eusebius, many other authors attempted Histories, including Sulpitius Severus, Hermias Sozomen, Socrates Scholasticus, Theodoret, Evagrius Scholasticus, John of Ephesus, Gennadius of Marseilles, Isidore of Seville, Bede the Venerable, and others (just to list the major attempts through the 7th century). But none of these authors--and some would argue that none since--achieved what Eusebius did in his Ecclesiastical History. In fact, many didn't even try, and simply picked up the history of the Christian Church at the point where Eusebius had left off.

Eusebius is sometimes accused of being biased, but then everyone is biased. It is true that he might not have followed the strict standards followed by many modern historians (to expect that he would as some objectors do is totally anachonistic), but one thing is for sure, Eusebius was not simply a cheerleader for his own personal beliefs, nor someone who would gloss over differences or arguments within the Church. If someone wants a specific example (and one that isn't a small issue), one could read over his overview of how the Scriptural Canon was compiled and debated.

When it came to the Epistle of James from the New Testamnet, for instance, Eusebius at one point calls it "the so-called epistle of James" and says that it is "Among the disputed writings, which are nevertheless recognized by many" (Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, 3, 25). In another place Eusebius is speaking of James of Jerusalem, who was the first bishop of the Christian Church there; Eusebius says that James "is said to be the author of the first of the so-called catholic epistles. But it is to be observed that it is disputed; at least, not many of the ancients have mentioned it... Nevertheless we know that [The Epistle of James] also, with the rest, have been read publicly in very many churches."(Eusebius, History, 2, 23)

This is a very good book for anyone interested in Christian History, especially if you are interested in how the actual figures in that history saw their predecessors, and not just in reading the summaries and compilations (and unfortunately, many times, wild speculations) of 19th and 20th century historians. One could also argue that his History, while perhaps a bit more biased in that it was written by a Christian for Christians, was also in some ways closer to the truth than histories today which might technically be more factual.

I know this sounds contradictory, but here is what I mean. Descartes said (rightly) that "history" as we perceive it was for the most part distorted, since history left out most of the minor, mundane thoughts and events of life and focused on the important or sensational aspects of life. History is therefore distorted in that it doesn't tell us about the lives and cultures of people, but only about what their leaders or generals or other great and important men did. Eusebius is someone who included some of everyday stuff in his History. It might not wow people, but it serves a much more important purpose: to put the great events into perspective. Great events and people are only great when compared to others, after all. And in that way, we can also say that Eusebius is indeed great.

Excellent introduction
By Florentius
This book was first assigned to me as a student of late Roman history and it was one that had a great impact on me. More than a mere ecclesiastical history, it is a defense of Christianity written by a Bishop of the 4th century. Having lived through the persecution of Diocletian and been a confidant of the first Christian Roman emperor, Constantine, Eusebius recounts the tumultuous history of the Church in all its tragedy and triumph.

Quoting from the early Church fathers, Josephus, and sacred scripture, Eusebius proceeds through the reigns of the various Roman emperors from the time of Christ down to his own time--a period of over 300 years. Among the most fascinating information included is the curious correspondence between Jesus himself and Abgar the Toparch of Edessa a city in western Asia Minor in which Jesus promises to send one of His disciples to cure Abgar after His ascension. Though of uncertain authenticity, the tale has been used in recent years to link the Holy Shroud of Turin to the Mandylion of Edessa.

Also of interest are the numerous persecution, miracle, heresy, and martyrdom narratives that are packed into this book. The recounting of the marytrdoms of St. Polycarp and St. Justin Martyr are particularly compelling.

In short, this book is a treasure house of information on the early Church and no serious student of Church history can neglect it. Note, however, that this book does not contain the famous story of Constantine's miraculous conversion--seeing a cross in the sky with the words, "Conquer by this." If I remember correctly, this incident is recounted separately in the "Vita Constantini" also written by Eusebius.

As for the Penguin translation, I am not qualified to comment. If you are in need of the original Greek, I recommend the edition from the Loeb Classical Library (vol. 265) also available here on Amazon.
