About the Author

Paul Viotti is Professor at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies and Executive Director of the Institute on Globalization & Security. He also served for three decades in the Air Force, retiring as a Colonel after teaching political science at the Air Force Academy for 20 years.

 

Mark V. Kauppi is the Program Manager for the Department of Defense's counterterrorism training program for intelligence analysts; he is responsible for providing and overseeing instruction to analysts not only from the Department of Defense but also intelligence agencies, law enforcement organizations, and foreign partners. Mark has been an adjunct professor at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service since 2000.

EXCELLENCE!

I must say that I absolutely LOVE this textbook. I know, I know, I sound like a complete nerd right now but for any political science, international studies, european studies, et cetera major this is the book for you! It explains in-depth the different schools of IR Theory, current political issues, how the past has given rise to today's political system, et cetera. I only wish I had this book for some of my previous classes!

Very good book, although I liked one of the earlier editions better

I purchased this book about a year ago and I think that this is a great introductory level book. It's really packed with information and it's organized well, however, I have read one of the earlier editions as well and I believe I like that one better (the 4th edition, 2010). In my opinion, the 4th edition was better organized and somehow it seemed a bit more straightforward. Regardless, this is still a great book for class or personal use if one is interested in this subject area and the information in both editions is largely the same. I enjoyed it and my copy is filled with underlines and highlighter marks.

The book, International Relations and World Politics, was very useful and effective for my academic college work. However, there were various mistakes in the context section for page referencing, spelling errors, and some syntex errors. Therefore, it was a great asset to have for my academic class as it was needed, but as reliable contentual aspects I used additional resources to make sure the information was accurate.

About the Author

Edith Foster is Associate Professor of History at Ashland University. She is the author of Thucydides, Pericles, and Periclean Imperialism, of articles on Thucydides and Lucretius in the American Journal of Philology (2009) and in Sea of Languages: Complicating the History of Western Translation (forthcoming), and of numerous book reviews in BMCR, CPH, and Gnomon.

Donald Lateiner studies Greek historiography, ancient epic, and the ancient novels. He is the author of The Historical Method of Herodotus and Sardonic Smile: Nonverbal Behaviors in Homeric Epic. He has introduced and annotated translations of Herodotus and Thucydides. He teaches Greek, Latin, and folklore at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Deeply spiritual and practical.

I loved this book every moment I was reading it, and it lifts my heart to open it at random and reread passages I highlighted. Lynch says he bases the book on two assumptions. A Living Classic

I read this book when it first came out in the 1960s. It became my favourite then, and it still is. I reread this book almost every year. When I call it a "living" classic, I mean precisely that: it is the fuel for living because it provides the mental scope, architecture and thinking processes to live a full and healthy life. The book has been an anchor for me for over 30 years precisely because it positions the role of imagination in such a clear fashion as the instrument of living. Imagination is not only healer of the hopeless, it is the healer of the process of living. I cannot thank the author enough for his contribution.

It remains the best examination of hope I've ever read

I bought this to put next to the well marked-up copy I bought about fifty years ago. Lynch looks at hope from not only a religious point of view, but a psychological point of view as well. It remains the best examination of hope I've ever read, and one of my "top ten" lifetime books. The supplemental readings alone are worth the price of the book.
