Conceptual Models: Core to Good Design (Synthesis Lectures on Human-Centered Informatics), by Austin Henderson, Jeff Johnson

People make use of software applications in their activities, applying them as tools in carrying out tasks. That this use should be good for people--easy, effective, efficient, and enjoyable--is a principal goal of design. In this book, we present the notion of Conceptual Models, and argue that Conceptual Models are core to achieving good design. From years of helping companies create software applications, we have come to believe that building applications without Conceptual Models is just asking for designs that will be confusing and difficult to learn, remember, and use.

We show how Conceptual Models are the central link between the elements involved in application use: people's tasks (task domains), the use of tools to perform the tasks, the conceptual structure of those tools, the presentation of the conceptual model (i.e., the user interface), the language used to describe it, its implementation, and the learning that people must do to use the application. We further show that putting a Conceptual Model at the center of the design and development process can pay rich dividends: designs that are simpler and mesh better with users' tasks, avoidance of unnecessary features, easier documentation, faster development, improved customer uptake, and decreased need for training and customer support.

A welcome addition to the body of rigorous thinking, planning and documentation design teams bring to advanced development
By mindcentric
"Conceptual Models" came highly recommended by Hugh Dubberly, and I wasn't disappointed. Henderson & Johnson offer a comprehensive user-centered approach to describing in plain language the objectives, components, operations and attributes of any given product or service application. No small thing. Getting clear on the underlying concepts and their relationships can be hard indeed, muddied by all manner of technical jargon, legacy thinking and marketing rhetoric. I lead teams on some of the more complex web-based enterprise software out there, and this book provides a valuable general template for making sophisticated offerings easier to understand, build, sell and use. Remember when the reporting language of interaction designers consisted of mostly of a few use-cases, an information architecture, a set of user interface controls and screen designs? "Conceptual Models" practically extends the influence of good human-centered design-thinking across what is otherwise a fairly narrow technical development arena. I recommend it. -Michael Eckersley, PhD, HumanCentered

Excellent book on an overlooked aspect of design
By michael
As a UX Designer working on software applications, this book is an excellent resource on how to approach the larger problem.
Oftentimes I find myself reading requirements, and my first instinct is to envision screens, and the relevant components.

This book has really me helped to step back, look at the related parts, and start to assemble a coherent model. By doing so, it's helped me to pare back the UI, and provide a coherent narrative for the user... Highly recommended, especially for UX people coming from the design side of things.

Went to see Jeff and Austin talk for an hour on the contents of this book...
By Tree Squirrel
I went to go see Jeff and Austin talk for an hour on the contents of this book in Feb, 2013. It was amazing. I'm finally buying this book today. The talk was great for psychologically minded people, designers, and concept-minded problem-solvers. I know this field will get even bigger in the future. I currently work as a webdesign consultant/analyst. This will be extremely helpful for me. I highly recommend hiring Jeff and Austin to come speak at your business if you do anything software related. If I were to chose between reading this book and taking a class in User Experience, I would chose this book. You can also get a pdf version of book for slightly less through the publishers website.

Packed with challenges
By BW
This book is full of fun lateral thinking puzzles, some actually based on history, some gruesome, and both quick and easy puzzles as well as hard ones. There are clues included, so you can help people along without giving away the answer. It's the best money I've spent if a party you're having starts to get a little boring. Not to mention the method of thought required to solve the puzzles will help you in every day life.

Brain Training Having Fun
By E. F.
This book has many clever and interesting ideas, puzzles, and exercises to sharpen your thinking. The solution for some of the puzzles or questions doesn't make much sense, but it does make you aware of how to think "out of the box". Not every answer can be reached through logic, and learning that is good training for accepting and solving life's challenges. I bought this book first for a 12 year old child who is great at math but not crazy about reading, and I thought, this book is so much fun, he might just get into reading it. And then I bought a second copy for myself because i liked it so much.

Instant Magick: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Spellcraft, by Christopher Penczak

What if you could practice magick anytime, without the use of ceremonial spells, altars, or magickal tools? Items such as candles, special ingredients, and exotic symbols are necessary to perform many types of magick, but these items aren't always feasible, attainable, or even available. The purest form of magick-tapping into your own energetic awareness to create change-is accessible simply through the power of your will.

Popular author Christopher Penczak explains how to weave natural energies into every facet of life by inspiring readers to explore their own individual willpower. This book features personalized techniques used to weed out any unwanted, unhealthy, or unnecessary desires to find a true, balanced magickal being. Penczak's innovative, modern spellcasting techniques utilize meditation, visualization, words, and intent in any situation, at any time. The results can seem instantaneous, and the potential limitless.

From Publishers Weekly
In this, his 10th volume on metaphysics, Penczak praises the traditional tools of magick (e.g., altars, candles and special ingredients), but devotes his energies to spells "accessible at any time, through meditation, visualization, words, and intent." Most of the book deals with clearly described procedures that are designed to effect change upon the spell caster more than on the outside world. After providing introductory techniques to alter consciousness, often through breathing, Penczak offers cross-cultural paradigms (the five elements, the web of life, chakras, astrology and the Tree of Life), encouraging readers to build a working familiarity with these tools for harnessing energy to create change. The 28 spells themselves range from the pedestrian (finding a good parking space) to the sublime (animal communication) as well as the ongoing and essential (perseverance). For each he provides corresponding colors, elements, chakras, planets, entities and the like. His clear instructions make this magick within reach of everyone, and his substantive appendix of corresponding systems (stones, animals, deities, etc.) is helpful. Chapters on healing are especially valuable. Penczak contends that in focused states of mind, clarified, applied thoughts are real things that shape us and our world. To this end, we should engage them with wisdom and precision. (Feb.)

As the title says - instant and uncomplicated magick advice
By Ria
While some of Penczak's books are very down to earth and uncomplicated to follow and thus a good book for a beginner or someone who does not want to get lost in magickal wording, this is not that type of book. You will need already some knowledge of the magickal world and vocabulary to direct you through the labyrinth of this book. But on the other side, this book teaches how to do magick instantly. It does not mean necessarily that you will see instant results. It means more that you can do magick and add magick to your daily life without the props or without many props. While Prenczak states what props do help, he teaches you that in the end it is about the intent and the energy you put into it. Some of the exercises will probably not be interesting for some people, some others will be for almost anyone around. To the first group would be one that opens a gate between the worlds, to the second group would be one that helps you find a parking space close to your home when you probably know that this borders on a miracle.

An Instant Classic
By RBSF
This is my first book written by Penczak, and I liked it so much that I went ahead and bought two more of his books by the time I had read up to the third chapter.

Anyone who reads books about magick knows that the market is flooded with authors that are all fluff and no substance. And then of course, there are those on the other extreme that write about magick in a manner that is utterly dry, condescending, and devoid of everything that makes magick worth learning in the first place.

Similar in style to Scott Cunningham, Penczak is one of those rare authors in the field that can take a potentially complicated subject and present it to the reader in a delightfully simple and practical manner, while clearly speaking from a wide breadth of knowledge and experience. He maintains a fast and friendly pace throughout each chapter that not only explains the concepts of Instant Magick but inspires you to START USING THEM INSTANTLY!

More than once I found myself torn between putting down the book to try out the next sample spell or meditation, or reading on to the next chapter.

Although more experienced practitioners are sure to find a lot of familiar material here, I doubt they'll find such a wide variety of it, contained in such an easily digestible package.

For newcomers, especially Wiccans, this book is simply a "must have." I certainly wish I it had been around when I started out!

So why only 4 stars? Well, I want to make clear that in my opinion, Penczak is a 5 Star Author. I just felt that he missed the mark slightly with this title.

Here's Why:

First and foremost, a fair amount of the book is actually a collection of meditations and breathing exercises that are probably best (or most easily) performed at home or at least with some level of privacy. In this sense, the title is perhaps a little misleading.

I wanted to see more examples of how Penczak himself performs Instant Magick in "real world" situations - while stuck on a crowded subway car or standing in shopping lines, etc. While he certainly provides the tools and the encouragement to do so yourself, I would have liked to hear more from his own day-to-day experiences in which spells are cast "instantly" while dealing with the hustle and bustle of the external world.

Which leads me to my next minor criticism, while he encourages the reader to find their own personal and spontaneous style of practice, the contents of the book are predominantly restricted to innovations on Wiccan traditions. This is of course great for Wiccans, but I would have liked to see a little more variety and creativity in his examples. I think some mention of Chaos Magick or perhaps a little advice on how one could employ popular culture as part of their spellwork (if the reader is so inclined) would have been appropriate here. For a book that is meant to present a new, adaptive approach to magick, it lacked some of the modern creativity I had hoped for.

Lastly, there was, in my opinion, an over-abundance of traditional magickal correspondence lists (astrological, herbal, stones, Deities, etc) throughout the book followed by a whole section of Correspondence Charts in the Appendix. Although he includes these lists with the intention of giving the reader a variety of options to pick and choose from, in my opinion, these lists may potentially divert the reader from far more vast resources - their own imagination and creativity.

For most experienced practitioners, these lists are already well-known territory. For beginners, they are probably better learned elsewhere, more throughly, and prior to employing them with the techniques of "Instant Magick."

I personally felt these last pages would have been much better spent discussing in more detail the potential of using one's imagination to forge new paths in the realm of magickal practice rather than picking and choosing from already well-traveled routes.

If I sound excessively critical, it's only because this book is in fact so well written, that for me, the few imperfections it has were all the more noticeable.

But all criticism aside, this book is just too good to pass up. Don't miss it!

Solid intro for the beginner

In Instant Magick, Christopher Penczak gets to the bare bones of magical practice. He gives you techniques that don't require fancy tools or regalia. His writing is clear and friendly and gets to the point quickly. He gives you the three basic ingredients of magic - altering consciousness, focusing will, and directing energy and exercises to develop the skills needed for each step.

Basically, the word "instant" in the title is a bit of a misnomer. It is referring to the fact that the only tool that you need to perform magic is your mind. You will still have to put out the mental energy to do it, and the author gives you a solid foundation to start from.

It has a heavy Wiccan (i.e. continual mention of the Rede) and new age flavor. However, Mr. Penczak presents five different paradigms from which to practice magic. In this way, he encourages the reader to make their own way steering clear of dogma if they so choose. He includes visualizations to introduce you to each paradigm and relate to its energy.

The advanced practitioner may find very little of use here. This is definitely a practical magic book for the beginner. He encourages starting out small and building confidence in magical ability and gives the reader the tools to do that. There are appendices with short lists of correspondences, which are not comprehensive, but they do provide a starting point for your spells.

He clearly states that this system is not meant to replace more elaborate techniques. The focus is to teach the aspiring magician the energy behind spellcraft. He also demonstrates that you don't have to break the bank buying spell ingredients to do successful magic.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

The problem of estimating the values of a random (or stochastic) process given observations of a related random process is encountered in many areas of science and engineering, e.g., communications, control, signal processing, geophysics, econometrics, and statistics. Although the topic has a rich history, and its formative stages can be attributed to illustrious investigators such as Laplace, Gauss, Legendre, and others, the current high interest in such problems began with the work of H. Wold, A. N. Kolmogorov, and N. Wiener in the late 1930s and early 1940s. N. Wiener in particular stressed the importance of modeling not just "noise" but also "signals" as random processes. His thought-provoking originally classified 1942 report, released for open publication in 1949 and now available in paperback form under the title Time Series Analysis, is still very worthwhile background reading.

As with all deep subjects, the extensions of these results have been very far-reaching as well. A particularly important development arose from the incorporation into the theory of multichannel state-space models. Though there were various earlier partial intimations and explorations, especially in the work of R. L. Stratonovich- in the former Soviet Union, the chief credit for the explosion of activity in this direction goes to R. E. Kalman, who also made important related contributions to linear systems, optimal control, passive systems, stability theory, and network synthesis.

In fact, least-squares estimation is one of those happy subjects that is interesting not only in the richness and scope of its results, but also because of its mutually beneficial connections with a host of other (often apparently very different) subjects. Thus, beyond those already named, we may mention connections with radiative transfer and scattering theory, linear algebra, matrix and operator theory, orthogonal polynomials, moment problems, inverse scattering problems, interpolation theory, decoding of Reed-Solomon and BCH codes, polynomial factorization and root distribution problems, digital filtering, spectral analysis, signal detection, martingale theory, the so-called Hh theories of estimation and control, least-squares and adaptive filtering problems, and many others. We can surely apply to it the lines written by William Shakespeare about another (beautiful) subject:

"Age does not wither her, nor custom stale,
Her infinite variety."

Though we were originally tempted to cover a wider range, many reasons have led us to focus this volume largely on estimation problems for finite-dimensional linear systems with state-space models, covering most aspects of an area now generally known as Wiener and Kalman filtering theory. Three distinctive features of our treatment are the pervasive use of a geometric point of view, the emphasis on the numerically favored square-root/array forms of many algorithms, and the emphasis on equivalence and duality concepts for the solution of several related problems in adaptive filtering, estimation, and control. These features are generally absent in most prior treatments, ostensibly on the grounds that they are too abstract and complicated. It is our hope that these misconceptions will be dispelled by the presentation herein, and that the fundamental simplicity and power of these ideas will be more widely recognized arid exploited.

The material presented in this book can be broadly categorized into the following topics:

Introduction and Foundations
Chapter 1: Overview
Chapter 2: Deterministic Least-Squares Problems
Chapter 3: Stochastic Least-Squares Problems
Chapter 4: The Innovations Process
Chapter 5: State-Space Models

Estimation of Stationary Processes
Chapter 6: Innovations for Stationary Processes
Chapter 7: Wiener Theory for Scalar Processes
Chapter 8: Recursive Wiener Filters

Estimation of Nonstationary Processes
Chapter 9: The Kalman Filter
Chapter 10: Smoothed Estimators

Fast and Array Algorithms
Chapter 11: Fast Algorithms
Chapter 12: Array Algorithms
Chapter 13: Fast Array Algorithms

Continuous-Time Estimation
Chapter 16: Continuous-Time State-Space Estimation

Advanced Topics
Chapter 14: Asymptotic Behavior
Chapter 15: Duality and Equivalence in Estimation and Control
Chapter 17: A Scattering Theory Approach

Being intended for a graduate-level course, the book assumes familiarity with basic concepts from matrix theory, linear algebra, linear system theory, and random processes. Four appendices at the end of the book provide the reader with background material in all these areas.

There is ample material in this book for the instructor to fashion a course to his or her needs and tastes. The authors have used portions of this book as the basis for one-quarter first-year graduate level courses at Stanford University, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of California at Santa Barbara; the students were expected to have had some exposure to discrete-time and state-space theory. A typical course would start with Secs.1.1-1.2 as an overview (perhaps omitting the matrix derivations), with the rest of Ch. 1 left for a quick reading (and re-reading from time to time), most of Chs. 2 and 3 (focusing on the geometric approach) on the basic deterministic and stochastic least-squares problems, Ch. 4 on the innovations process, Secs. 6.4-6.5 and 7.3-7.7 on scalar Wiener filtering, Secs. 9.1-9.3, 9.5, and 9.7 on Kalman filtering, Secs. 10.1-10.2 as an introduction to smoothing, Secs. 12.1-12.5 and 13.1-13.4 on array algorithms, and Secs. 16.1-16.4 and 16.6 on continuous-time problems.

More advanced students and researchers would pursue selections of material from Sec. 2.8, Chs. 8, 11, 14, 15, and 17, and Apps. E and R These cover, among other topics, least-squares problems with uncertain data, the problem of canonical spectral factorization, convergence of the Kalman filter, the algebraic Riccati equation, duality, backwards-time and complementary models, scattering, etc. Those wishing to go on to the more recent H¥ theory can find a treatment closely related to the philosophy of the current book (cf. Sec. 1.6) in the research monograph of Hassibi, Sayed, and Kailath (1999).

A feature of the book is a collection of nearly 300 problems, several of which complement the text and present additional results and insights. However, there is little discussion of real applications or of the error and sensitivity analyses required for them. The main issue in applications is constructing an appropriate model, or actually a set of models, which are further analyzed and then refined by using the results and algorithms presented in this book. Developing good models and analyzing them effectively requires not only a good appreciation of the actual application, but also a good understanding of the theory, at both an analytical and intuitive level. It is the latter that we have tried to achieve here; examples of successful applications have to be sought in the literature, and some references are provided to this end.

Acknowledgments
The development of this textbook has spanned many years. So the material, as well as its presentation, has benefited greatly from the inputs of the many bright students who have worked with us on these topics: J. Omura, P Frost, T Duncan, R. Geesey, D. Duttweiler, H. Aasnaes, M. Gevers, H. Weinert, A. Segall, M. Mort B. Dickinson, G. Sidhu, B. Friedlander, A. Vieira, S. Y Kung, B. Levy, G. Verghese, D. Lee, J. Delosme, B. Porat, H. Lev-Ari, J. Cioffi, A. Bruckstein, T. Citron, Y Bresler, R. Roy, J. Chun, D. Slock, D. Pal, G. Xu, R. Ackner, Y Cho, P Park, T. Boros, A. Erdogan, U. Forsell, B. Halder, H. Hindi, V Nascimento, T. Pare, R. Merched, and our young friend Amir Ghazanfarian (in memoriam) from whom we had so much more to learn.

We are of course also deeply indebted to the many researchers and authors in this beautiful field. Partial acknowledgment is evident through the citations and references; while the list of the latter is quite long, we apologize for omissions and inadequacies arising from the limitations of our knowledge and our energy. Nevertheless, we would be remiss not to explicitly mention the inspiration and pleasure we have gained in studying the papers and books of N. Wiener, R. E. Kalman, and P Whittle.

Major support for the many years of research that led to this book was provided by the Mathematics Divisions of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Army Research Office, by the Joint Services Electronics Program, by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and by the National Science Foundation. Finally, we would like to thank Bernard Goodwin and Tom Robbins, as well as the staff of Prentice Hall, for their patience and other contributions to this project.

Linear Estimation from A to Z.
By Jeffrey Andrews
Kailath, Sayed, and Hassibi do an excellent job of explaining what is a fairly complicated subject. This book is best-suited for scholars who desire a deep understanding of estimation theory. Engineers who want to quickly understand how to implement a Kalman Filter might be better off buying Adaptive Filter Theory by Simon Haykin.
The first chapter provides a good overview of the book, although it makes the most sense once the subject matter of the rest of the book has been digested a bit. A consistent framework emphasizing innovations (or the new information which appears at any iteration) is used throughout the book, and both continuous and discrete-time techniques for stochastic estimation are given nearly equal treatment, although the real-world engineer is likely to be interested in the latter.
Professor Kailath's articulate nature and knack for the clever anecdote or one-liner shines throughout the book, making it, while very mathematical in nature, quite readable for the motivated student.

Wonderful and insightful
By Nicolas Chapados
This is one of the best engineering textbooks I have read, period. Although the subject matter is not for the faint-hearted, the authors' attention to pedagogical details shine throughout (repetition is the key to learning). The Kalman filter is introduced naturally as a consequence of a general framework for obtaining the best linear estimator of a random variable given others (earlier observations), and the geometric intuition is stressed repeatedly.
No important issue is omitted, including a very complete treatment of numerical issues and fast algorithms. My only gripe is with the assumption that all model parameters are KNOWN; in other words, the important aspect system identification (parameter estimation, learning, or whatever you call it in your field) is left to other textbooks.
Moreover, and no minor accomplishment, is the amazingly small number of typographical errors (at least up to where I have read so far; a bit over half the book), which is remarkable given the dense mathematical contents.
All in all, I would give it 6 stars if possible. Everything is there: it transmits a deep intuition for the matter, a places it in its historical context through interesting and amusing notes; it leaves the reader fulfilled but not overwhelmed.

Excellent text
By Shadow
This is an excellent text that covers estimation theory from a modern point of view. It will be especially interesting to anyone with a graduate degree in physics because Kailath, et al derive the theory of linear estimation from a point of view very similar to that of modern quantum mechanics - they even use similar bra/ket notation!

Basic and advanced statistical mathematics is somewhat an implied prerequisite for understanding this text. From what I have seen, I honestly find nothing negative to critique - its probably one of the best technical textbooks I have in my large library.

This unique guide to preparing Indian food using classic slow-cooker techniques features more than 50 recipes, beautifully illustrated with full-color photography throughout. These great recipes take advantage of the slow cooker's ability to keep food moist through its long cooking cycle, letting readers create dishes with far less oil and saturated fat than in traditional recipes. Anupy Singla shows the busy, harried family that cooking healthy is simple and that cooking Indian is just a matter of understanding a few key spices. Her "Indian Spices 101" chapter introduces readers to the mainstay spices of an Indian kitchen, as well as how to store, prepare, and combine them in different ways. Among her 50 recipes are all the classics — specialties like dal, palak paneer, and gobi aloo — and also dishes like butter chicken, keema, and much more. The result is a terrific introduction to making healthful, flavorful Indian food using the simplicity and convenience of the slow cooker.

Review

"Of all the world's cuisines, India's is perhaps best suited to the steady simmer of a slow cooker...If you love Indian food, have a look at Anupy Singla's The Indian Slow Cooker. Folded in with lush food photography are easy, healthful recipes with traditional flavors." —Lois White, Better Homes & Gardens

"My favorite new slow cooker book is The Indian Slow Cooker by Anupy Singla....Because Indian dishes are rich in spices and robust flavors, they stand up well in slow cookers. Singla actually developed the recipes specifically for the slow cooker so the techniques and ingredients work well in the machine." —Genevieve Ko, Good Housekeeping, October 14, 2011

“Singla's book goes against what many believe is required of Indian cuisine--infusing hot oil with a whole mess of spices as the base for dishes. Instead, she argues, throw everything into the Crock-Pot and let the aromatics do their thing... the book gives old- and new-school cooks alike ample reason to give Indian food a shot.” —Janet Rausa-Fuller, Chicago Sun-Times, October 20, 2011

"Ms. Singla says her book is aimed at anyone who wants to eat more vegetarian food and she doesn’t believe in calling Indian food ‘spicy’ or ‘exotic’ anymore." —Wall Street Journal, India Real Time Blog, August 24, 2010

"[The Indian Slow Cooker] is slim in appearance, a mere 136 pages. Yet the author has packed its pages with 50-plus recipes, lots of guidance and enough enthusiasm for slow cookers and Indian food that fans of either or both will be prompted to try one of her recipes...” —Judy Hevrdejs, Chicago Tribune, April 6, 2011

"Next time you have a hankering for Indian food, don't think take-out. Think ahead. That's the message from Anupy Singla, author of The Indian Slow Cooker who is on a mission to correct misperceptions about Indian food..." —Michele Kayal, Associated Press, October 26, 2010

"In her friendly voice, Anupy Singla welcomes everyone into her kitchen, even busy and beginner cooks. With her comprehensive guide to ingredients and surprisingly simple and healthy recipes that perfume the house on a cold day, The Indian Slow Cooker is a great first book on Indian cooking. We love recommending it to our customers!" — Lara Hamilton, Owner of Book Larder, Seattle, WA

"Anupy has a fantastic blog, Indian As Apple Pie, a beautiful cookbook, "The Indian Slow Cooker", and an innovative spice box product now being offered by Williams-Sonoma." —Nancy Loo, WGNtv.com, September 5, 2011

"Anupy is really on to something here. In 50 well-crafted and imaginative recipes, Anupy shows you how to use the modern slow cooker to get the beautiful, complex flavors of her ancient native cuisine. A book that will surprise you.” —Dorie Greenspan, author of Baking with Julia and Around My French Table, as well as contributing editor to Parade magazine, December 23, 2010

"For those who love Indian food--or who are interested in starting to explore it--Anupy shows how to prepare the classic dishes in healthful versions that use far less oil and saturated fat than traditional recipes...Anupy introduces the mainstay spices of an Indian kitchen, and how to store, prepare, and combine them in different preparations.” —WLS-ABC Channel 7, March 26, 2011

"The talented and beautiful Anupy Singla, author of The Indian Slow Cooker, understands that many home cooks are intimidated by Indian spices and cooking. So she created spice packets, small bundles of 5 essential Indian spices, that will get anyone cooking Indian. Demystify something for people, and they will love you.” —Susan Russo, writer for FoodBlogga blog and contributor to NPR’s Kitchen Window

"Singla's recipes, and writing in general, exudes common sense and practicality...Straightforward, healthy recipes for easy preparations of all your favourite Indian dishes combined with mouthwatering photographs make this a cookbook any lover of Indian food will appreciate." —Rebecca Baugniet, EAT Magazine

Good intro to Indian cuisine, recipes are so-so
By Sarah Schwartz
I'm an avid slow cooker, and I have cooked my own Indian food for a long time, even making paneer from milk. I've made many restaurant basics on the stove, both from my own recipes and from recipes in books. I've even improvised Indian food in my slow cooker, especially moong dal with spinach (adapted from Suvir Saran's Indian Home Cooking), Goan fish (which I loved at a restaurant and reverse engineered; coconut milk + homemade curry paste + frozen salmon fillets, and after the fish was cooked I reduced the sauce on the stove), and a coconut dal recipe (adapted from Mark Bittman's Best Recipes in the World) that entranced even my most carnivorous friends.

I've used this book to cook about 8 recipes and here's what I've found. Implicitly I am comparing it with my favorite slow cooker books, the "Not your mother's slow cooker" and "Not your mother's slow cooker for two", which I like because they have a balanced set of recipes and have clearly tried making them different ways: they specify when things need to be browned before adding to slow cooker, and say whether high or low is better for a given recipe.

The 8 recipes I made are mustard greens and spinach, chana dal, green lentil and rice, dry dal, cauliflower, pigeon peas with garlic and lemon, and my boyfriend made the chicken vindaloo and chicken masala, and then made lamb vindaloo based on the chicken recipe.

Strengths:
1. Prioritizes spices: she says if you're going to buy 7 spices, which are the 8 you should buy. That wasn't a typo: she lists 7 of the crucial spices, and then adds an 8th, and then pictures of her crucial 7 spices include spice #8 while omitting another.

2. Some of the food is really good. I like the flavors of 5 of the 8 recipes we've made (disappointing ones discussed below). Other food others have liked, even thought I haven't, like the cauliflower.

3. I like how conversational the book is, and that she mentions how the recipes fit into her life.

4. I love that she has vegetable recipes --- most slow cooker cookbooks don't cook veggies outside of root vegetables.

5. I also like that my boyfriend got really excited to see the book --- he wanted to borrow it the day it came and was really excited to make the vindaloo.

6. As with any Indian cookbook, most recipes are suitable for people with the most common food restrictions: few or no recipes use peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, shellfish, wheat, soy, corn, and most are vegetarian. Many are dairy-free and vegan. They use little sugar and starch, so are fairly low glycemic index.

Weaknesses:
1. Avoids some obvious short-cuts: Someone who is using their slow cooker will want other short cuts that don't compromise flavor, such as pre-ground spices, frozen spinach, and canned tomatoes. Is someone who is using a slow cooker also going to grind their own coriander or dip a single tomato in boiling water to peel off the skin before cutting it? I only grind my own spices when I'm making a huge batch of curry paste that will last me a year.

2. Logistics are off. She tells you to buy 8 spices, but so far I haven't found a single recipe that uses 2 of the spices with no other special ingredients. 1 lb of mustard greens filled my entire 6 qt crockpot leaving little room for the 1 lb of spinach and spices, onion, garlic, ginger that I was supposed to add afterwards. Thankfully I was using frozen spinach, but 1 lb of fresh spinach would not have fit.

3. She buys into the fat-free fallacy that it's better to make enormous quantities of fat-free food than moderate quantities of normal-fat food, so most of the dal/bean recipes are fat-free. On a flavor basis, that's a huge negative: flavor is less full, texture is more gummy, and the hot spices are harsher than if made traditionally in oil. (The only times I've ever seen people get chemical burns in their mouth from hot peppers were when they were in fat-free dishes, so I think there's a real change in the quality of peppers when cooked in oil versus not.) On a health basis, it's also a huge negative. Fat-free food has a higher glycemic index than traditional food, so many people overeat when they eat fat-free food, and certainly they do not save calories.

4. The recipes make enormous quantities. The keema recipe calls for 4 pounds of ground meat (vs. ones I found online use 1 lb at a time). Dal recipes use 3-4 cups of lentils. Why contribute to American epidemic of huge portions? She gives directions for halving the recipes, but it's distracting to do that for each of the dozen ingredients in a recipe.

5. It's mostly legumes, with only 7 meat recipes, ~12 vegetable recipes, and no fish. Of the 7 meat recipes, she says a few aren't traditional, and three include dairy in a central role (e.g., butter chicken) so a given person might not even be able to use all 7 recipes without tinkering if they have food restrictions. (A little known fact: people with food allergies often rely extensively on Asian cookbooks because they avoid most common allergens. Normal people buy Asian cookbooks because they want to try cooking something new. People with food allergies buy Asian cookbooks because they can't eat half the recipes in western cookbooks.)

6. She gives a single time for how long a dish takes to cook, but she doesn't explain how your choice of crockpot size affects that time. She gives 2 choices of crockpots (4 and 5 qt) for making the cauliflower, but gives only one cooking time (3 hours). I used a 4 qt crockpot and it was still crunchy after 3 hours; presumably the 3 hours was for a 5 qt crockpot. As I learned from "Not your mother's slow cooker", cooking time varies with how full a crockpot is, with fuller crockpots taking longer to cook. Similar experience with the dry dal.

7. The first two recipes that I made were disappointing. Besides taking different amounts of time to cook than expected, the Aloo gobi (cauliflower with potatoes) was gritty with spices. You actually feel the vast quantity of spices as you eat it because there are tablespoons and tablespoons full of different spices. It's not a smooth feeling that you have from aloo gobi that you make on the stove. My guess is that the spices don't get a chance to dissolve into the oil. I served the aloo gobi to guests, and some of them loved it, and others weren't so excited, so it's personal taste. My boyfriend made lamb vindaloo, and there was the same thick grittiness from undissolved spices. My suggestion for the future will be to make spice pastes ahead of putting them in the slow cooker. The dry dal I made with urad dal, and it tasted raw after even twice as long as it was supposed to cook, and I didn't like the taste. And so I added water and cooked it overnight, and it still did not taste good. So I ended up with cups and cups of this dal that is barely palatable --- I ate a couple of servings, but threw 3/4 of it out, which I virtually never do. Maybe I just don't like urad dal, though, or maybe mine was old.

Btw, one reviewer mentioned how expensive it was to buy the ingredients. If you can find an Indian grocery, they shouldn't be. I went to my local Indian grocery (Patel Brothers, which is a national chain), and bought the full set of suggested spices for my boyfriend, some extra spices for myself, 4 lbs black chickpeas, and some other groceries, and my total was 25 dollars. And this is 7 and 14 oz bags of spices, not the small bottles from supermarkets.

I'm glad that I have this book, but since I already have to tinker with the recipes such as by adding fat and halving the recipes, I think that I would have been better off with a good Indian cookbook and using the slow cooker whenever there's a long simmer time, as I've done in the past.

Finally!!! Brilliant SLow Cooker Recipes for Vegetarians & Non-Vegetarians Alike.
By indiestar
I have been waiting forever for someone to write a wonderful collection of Indian recipes for the slow cooker and my prayers have been answered! Anupy Singla has put together some lovely easy Indian recipes - where all you do is throw a bunch of easy-to-find ingredients in the slow cooker, set it and forget it for several hours! The recipes mainly focus on vegetarian ingredients but there are some lovely meat curries (with notes on how to make many of them vegetarian with soy crumbles or seitan).

The fact that she has figured out how to make kheema (a ground beef and peas comfort-food dish) in the slow cooker (genius!) is worth the price of this book! I can't wait to make every recipe and will probably be making a batch of the "Wet Curry" every week to freeze and use for quick weeknight meals.

Overall, I am thrilled with this book - it will let our family eat delicious and healthy Indian meals more often than we were able to before. Yippee!

Great Cookbook, Wonderful Food!
By M. Dempsey
I'll start my review by stating I've read all of the 1- and 2-star reviews here on Amazon.com before I prepared most of the recipes and I'll try and address many of the concerns noted there.

I am graduate student who loves to cook but who is often busy (or, at least, should be busy) studying and a slow cooker was a Christmas gift for me to allow me more time to study yet still prepare delicious, home cooked meals.

In my search for "healthy" slow cooker cookbooks, I ran across this book and ordered it instantly as I love Asian cuisine. I'll admit, I lean more towards sushi, Thai, and Chinese than I do Indian (so, I'm no expert) but I've liked every Indian dish I've had previously in restaurants.

Before writing a review, I decided to try a swatch of recipes from the book. Here they are (for what it's worth, in order that I made them):

Traditional Chicken Curry, page 108
Rice Pudding, page 127
Punjabi Curried Kidney Beans, page 74
Spiced Cauliflower and Potatoes, page 91
Black Lentils, page 51

Many of the negative reviews stated the dishes were:

- "too spicy" -- I didn't find this to be the case, at all. I went with the low end on the chilies (i.e. many recipes state 4-6 serrano peppers, I'd go with 4), often seeding/stemming at least one of them to cut down on the heat. If you don't like foods too spicy, but still want the flavor, I'd recommend using fewer peppers, or seeding/stemming them before adding them to the dish.

- "too salty" -- the author *clearly* states upfront that she uses kosher/sea salt in all recipes. If you use table salt, she recommends cutting the amount by half. As someone who never uses much salt in the preparation of his food, I've yet to find any dish "too salty"

- "undercooked meat/veggies" -- I own a 6-quart crock pot, which is larger than the 5-quart crock pot the author uses in all recipes. As such, my cooking times had to be longer (though, not by much. maybe 30 minutes), as it takes longer for the heating unit and stoneware to get up to temperature. Nevertheless, I have *never* had an undercooked dish by simply following directions and adding a smidge more time. Again, the author clearly states in her introduction (as do *all* slow cooker cookbooks I've run across) that different units heat differently, and cooking times need to be adjusted accordingly.

- "not authentic" -- this is one issue I cannot address, as I am not Indian nor did I grow up eating "authentic" Indian cuisine. However, each dish I have tried is tasty (as I'll elaborate on below).

- "too many beans/lentils/non-meat recipes" -- while I bought this book on a whim, if you are purchasing books through Amazon.com, many of them allow you to view the Table of Contents before purchasing the book. I recommend doing that, should you be worried too many recipes won't suit your fancy.

- "all the spices are the same in each recipe" -- I'll admit, this had me highly skeptical, as well. With almost every recipe using the same spices (turmeric, red chilie powder, garam masala, cinnamon, ginger, serranos, cumin, coriander), I really thought the dishes would taste waaay too similar and I'd get sick of each recipe. Boy was I ever wrong! Each dish, while similar, has it's own unique, distinct flavor that is just wonderful! On top of that, as as graduate student, it's budget friendly, as I only need a few spices in the pantry to make a wide variety of dishes!

Now, on to my food reviews:

Traditional Chicken Curry: as this was the first dish I tried, I had high hopes (especially considering my apartment smelled fantastic for hours!). It came out very delicious and was easy to make. And much to my surprise, it tasted even better the next day!

Rice Pudding: my least favorite of the five dishes I've tried so far. I made it twice, as I messed it up the first time, and I did like it better the second time. Honestly, I think I'm just not a huge cardamom fan and it was "too much" the first time. The second time, I used ground cardamom, instead of seeds, hoping to tone down that particular flavor. It worked, and I enjoy it much more now.

Punjabi Curried Kidney Beans: let me state upfront I am not a vegetarian and almost every meal I typically make contains meat. Boy was I surprised how much I loved this...even more than the chicken curry! While I'm not a vegetarian, this cookbook may yet turn me into one! I was amazed how the spices and flavors created a wonderful dish that didn't even make me miss meat!

Spiced Cauliflower and Potatoes: again, upfront, I hate cauliflower. Seriously! But, I was so pleased with the curried kidney beans, I decided to give this a whirl. Again, wonderful!

Black Lentils: I am eating this as I write, and having never had lentils before, it is again delicious and I don't even miss meat. Truly a compliment!

I've already gone to the grocery store to stock up ingredients for the next few dishes I want to try...I've been eating nothing but Indian food since this book arrived and I can't say I'm sick of it! I also love that she gives the history of each dish, along with personal anecdotes about each. For me, it really helped bring the book/food alive.

While everyone has a different palate, and different tastes, I can honestly say I have enjoyed every dish I have made. If you love flavorful, simple foods to make, I suggest you try this book.
