Maria Yefremova graduated cum laude from the Faculty of Law at the State University - Higher School of Economics in Moscow and is qualified to practise law in the Russian Federation. She also holds an LLM degree in Public International and European Union Law from the University of Amsterdam. Prior to establishing a legal practice with Svetlana Yakovleva, Maria worked for the Moscow office of White & Case LLC. Maria is currently Corporate Legal Counsel at Level 3 Communications. Svetlana Yakovleva graduated cum laude from the Faculty of Law at the State University - Higher School of Economics in Moscow and is qualified to practise law in the Russian Federation. She holds an LLM degree in Law and Economics from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam and the University of Hamburg (EMLE). Svetlana worked for the Moscow office of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, then established and ran a legal practice with Maria Yefremova. John Kiernan has published extensively on histochemical methods since his first scientific paper in 1964. His textbook encompasses his wide personal experience and interest in dyes, staining and histochemical methodologies. It is exceptional that he is the sole author of such a compendium in light of the wide range and amount of material included... To understand the mechanisms or pitfalls involved in a specific histochemical technique, one usually can find the answer in only a very select group of books that deal with the theory and practice of histological and histochemical techniques. It was a pleasure to see that John Kiernan continues to update his book. Most practicing histochemists and research students involved in biomedical research and diagnostic histopathology tend to use histochemical methods without understanding the chemistry involved in the staining reactions or the limitations of the procedures. It is common practice to use a recipe book of histological and histochemical methods and follow the procedures. Unfortunately, there is an overall lack of interest in the chemistry of the dyes or how they stain specific products in cells and tissues and the last time that many histochemists considered chemical formulae was often during their undergraduate studies. The current book by Kiernan takes into account the chemistry involved with the premise that such knowledge makes us better histochemists and researchers. Or in the words of the author: "It cannot be overemphasized that unless the student or technician understands the rationale of all that is to be done, he will not do it properly". A similar situation occurs in recording images with a microscope. If you understand the construction of the instrument and its optical components and set it up accordingly, you will be a much better microscopist and obtain optimal images. The first edition of this book appeared in 1981, with subsequent editions in 1990 and 1999. This latest edition includes in a single volume an extensive survey of the chemical and physical principles of fixation, staining, and histochemistry. In addition to the classical techniques still in use, the new edition has been expanded to include more recent developments and includes newer procedures that are anticipated to become standard methods in research and diagnostic histopathology. The book encompasses the relations of chemical structures and reactions to fixation, tissue processing, staining, enzyme localization and immunohistochemistry. The first four chapters contain descriptions of the newer reagents and techniques, with subsequent chapters dealing with historical "classical" staining with dyes. The chapter on nucleic acids now includes discussion of in situ hybridization and methods for detecting apoptotic cells. Although the histological and histochemical techniques for animal tissues predominate, there is now some discussion and methodology also applicable to fixation, processing and staining of plant tissues and microorganisms. The bibliography is extensive and encompasses over 1300 references. The text is written in classical English spelling and not US spelling (e.g. colour, haematoxylin, sulphuric, bisulphite etc.). I do not know how this affects the readership in the major markets in the US. The author tries to correct the inconsistencies of biologists in their spelling of names of dyes. The ending "-ine" should be used when the dye is an amine or a derivative of an amine (e.g. fuchsine and not fuchsin, safranine and not safranin), whereas for a dye that is not an amine, there is no terminal "e" (e.g. eosin and not eosine, haematein and not haemateine). I think that the widespread use of incorrect spelling (e.g. fuchsin) will mean that this spelling has now become the custom and acceptable, apart from correction of manuscripts by pedantic and critical editors. It may be a surprise for the general reader to learn that hematoxylin is not a dye, but only after its partial oxidation to its active ingredient, hematin. This explains why we leave freshly made hematoxylin solution to mature in order for it to become effective (if you do not purchase a commercial solution of hematoxylin, which now seems to be common practice). The correct term for H & E staining is Hemalum and Eosin. I was also pleased that the correct explanation for the von Kossa technique was given. It is commonly designated as a histochemical method for calcium but it is really a method for phosphate and carbonate, the anions with which the metal is associated in normal and pathological calcified tissues. I personally believe that this text should be found on the bookshelves of every histology and histochemistry laboratory as a basic reference source. It is not a book to be read from start to finish, but should be consulted by researchers and in particular students before undertaking histochemical staining procedures. The book is very reasonably priced and to be objective, the purchase price is less than the cost of one or two antibodies or most laboratory chemicals, which, unlike a book, have a very limited life. -- Raymond Coleman Acta Histochemica

Great textbook!

I used this book for an African history class at Eastern Kentucky University. This book was very easy and fast to read as well as enjoyable, something I'm sure I've never said about a textbook before. Bravo Khapoya on making learning feel worth my time!

As far as book content, this book has so many great chapters on Africa's history. It is broad but has examples that pertain to the individual countries. Khapoya gives a broad knowledge base of the specific topics and informs the reader to study further on certain countries for more explanation. By providing a broad sense of the issues in Africa, the material made reading and comprehending better unlike how some authors get too in depth with an example or certain situation and creates an ambiguity on the entire subject, leaving the reader confused.

Would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn general and informative history on Africa.

Dr. Seuss genius at work

Sure, it teaches valuable vocabulary words and rhyme schemes to tiny tots. And no doubt there's a thesis somewhere comparing hapless Knox to Stalin knocking heads against the red-white-and-blue American Fox. But *Fox in Socks* is above all other things the first instrument of torture children can use against their parents.
Take Father, tired out from a hard day at the office. "Read me a story, Daddy," coos his blond princess. Father bravely tries to wrap his tongue around "Luke Luck likes lakes./ Luke's duck likes lakes." Daddy's little angel chortles with each misspoken word -- and there are plenty of them by the time he arrives at the muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle battle paddle battle." She goes to sleep secure in the knowledge that not only can she grow up to be president, but that she's already smarter than her poor parents.
And that's the genius of Dr. Suess. His tongue teasers and outrageous Goo Gooses and Bim Bens and Tweedle Beetles don't just
foster imagination -- they encourage kids to let it run rampant.

The Dr. Seuss tongue twisting workout!

Dr. Seuss has created another entertaining children's classic with "Fox in Socks." The plot is simple: the clever title character dazzles his friend Knox with a series of increasingly complex tongue twisters. Along the way, Seuss reveals a number of fantastic images: a marching band in which all the musicians are pigs, a crow in a top hat, and more.
The book even has a touch of science fiction when the Fox introduces Knox to a weird lake of chewing gum-like blue goo. But it's the tongue twisting rhymes that are the central attraction of this book. By the time you get to the "muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle," you will certainly appreciate Seuss's writerly virtuosity. This is a fun book, and the Fox earns his place alongside Seuss's most memorable characters.

Shortened from original, but good for toddlers

This is a great book to read to toddlers. Fox in Socks is a masterpiece of linguistic fun.

However, this printing is not the whole book. The storyline conflict between Knox and the Fox has been removed, as have many other small pieces, e.g. "If sir, you sir, choose to chew sir, with the goo goose, chew sir, do sir!" (I read the full version to my older children a lot!)

Having said that, the pages are cardboard, so toddlers can't accidentally rip them, and there won't be any toddler concern about why Knox is mad at the Fox.

So, for toddlers, pick this up now, and get the "full" version when they're a bit older.

Are there any limits?

I guess I'm naive. I keep thinking I've read a lot of erotic stories, then an author new to me pops up on a recommendation list, and I realize there's lots more kinky stuff out there. This book was a surprise, a young Catholic virgin and her Doctor and his "medically necessary treatments." Oh my! How naive am I? Does this really go on? I will make no more assumptions.

Bottom line is, I found this a very entertaning story. It's kinda shocking, kinda funny, very very hot. Who needs a plot? This short scenario is plenty entertaining. I think I'll read more from this author.

Mark Michaelis is founder of IntelliTect, where he serves as its Chief Technical Architect and trainer. For nearly two decades he has been a Microsoft MVP, and he is also a Microsoft Regional Director. Michaelis serves on several Microsoft software design review teams, including C#, Azure, SharePoint, and Visual Studio ALM. He speaks at developer conferences and has written numerous books.

 

Eric Lippert is developer on the C# analysis team at Coverity/Synopsys, was previously principal developer on Microsoft’s C# compiler team and a member of its C# language design team. During his 16 years at Microsoft, he also helped design and implement VBScript, JScript, Windows Script Host, and Visual Studio Tools for Office, and served on ECMA’s JavaScript standardization committee.

Excellent book, although the layout is a tad chaotic

Excellent book, although the layout is a tad chaotic, mixing C# versions. I've been doing C# constantly since 1.0, so I only care what's in C# 6.0 for my current project. But that's a tiny complaint; the book is thorough and very helpful. Worth every dollar.

The book was quite helpful modernizing a largish VS 2008 project to vs 2015. It was relatively easy to search for "C# 6" to find all the ways to improve the applications.

This is my "go to" book for learning .NET Framework features

I have to start out by saying I'm a big fan of Mark Michaelis and have had the pleasure of hearing him speak and a .NET User Group meeting. At that time his book was called Essential C# 3.0 for .NET framework 3.5.

I'm a consultant and this is crucial material to help prepare me for technical interviews and just overall day-day coding examples. Examples are clean and concise. This is my "go to" book for learning .NET Framework features. I have to say I'm lagging a bit on all the new changes so I was excited to find out that this book just released an update for C# version 6.

There have been many improvements in the language since the 3.0 book and this book has outlined those changes in a rather unique way. There is a main index listing all keywords and then a "topics" index organized by language version number. We also get the added benefit version tags, highlighting the version number within the text of the book. The versions are interlaced sequentially in a chapter rather than segmented out. That is you start out by reading about anonymous methods (C# 2.0) and segue in lambdas (C# 3.0) by the end of the chapter you are reading about a (C# 5.0) improvement called capturing loop variables. In this way, you see the evolution of the language. Really cool.

The C#/.NET version tags are very helpful. I typically skip the introduction because I already know all that basic stuff but saw a 6.0 version tag with a little gem called "string interpolation" on page 20 - It's a shorthand way of coding string.Format. I would have missed the new feature had it not been for the tag.

The C# version number is clearly highlighted so you know at all times what version you are reading about. If you need to find a specific feature use the full index. If you want to find new features to a specific language version, then use "Index of 6.0 Topics", "Index of 5.0 Topics", etc. This is the best approach to trying to index the massive amount of info. And this book is massive! I'm enjoying going thru it again as a review, but more importantly as an enhancement to my 6.0 knowledge. Thank you guys for this recent update.

Hidden treasure

I was looking for a book to fill in my gap of multithreading since the release of C# 6.0. I was going from book-to-book on Safari, looking for information about multithreading and thread synchronization when I came across this book. The explanation of these two topics was so good I knew I had to read the whole book.

The book does have an unusual layout. It describes how C# has changed since version 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and C# 6.0. If you want to "really" know C#, by all means- buy this book. Thank you, Mr Michaelis.

fabulous ideas

i love srini! this book is outstanding. tons of my favorite stickers were in here.

my only disappointment was that these are paper stickers. i incorrectly assumed that these would be vinyl stickers like what are sold on the website.

Kid sister approved!

I am so proud of Srini -- this book so far is his crowning achievement. As an Indian kid, it took a lot of nerves for him to take the path he's chosen, or I should say, blaze a trail. As my mom likes to say, he was reading at 2, skipped the second grade, had 15 years of classical violin training and went to Stanford -- only to study Sociology and play in punk rock bands! All you misfit kids, honor students and ADD-sufferers will instantly understand the humor and genius behind this project. The point is to have fun and express yourself!

great for [...] fans! ^_^

i have been keeping up with srini's stickers since i was 14 (i'm 20 now!), so i can't tell you how cool it is to have gotten 462 of them for under [...] bucks! ^_^ i used to try to scrimp and save and only buy the ones that i thought were essentials, but now i have most of my favorites and tons more!

yay, srini!

update: after using the stickers for awhile, i discovered they are not so good at sticking. they usually peel up w/in an hour or so. it's great to have them, i just wish i didn't have to carry tape around when i want to use them.
