“Outstanding, cutting-edge, and profound.  If you’re going to read one book on happiness, this is the one.”
—Nassim Nicholas Taleb, bestselling author of The Black Swan and Antifragile

“Happiness by Design is the best kind of psychology book: the ideas are fascinating, understanding them will make your life happier and more meaningful, and Dolan expresses them beautifully. Whether you’re a novice or a voracious consumer of happiness research, Happiness by Design hits all the right notes.”
—Adam Alter, bestselling author of Drunk Tank Pink

“Dolan gives a comprehensive overview of the science of happiness and useful tips to achieve it. In his quest to explain what makes us happy, Dolan touches on a powerful idea: happiness need not be pursued, simply rediscovered. In other words, sources of pleasure and purpose are all around us, if only one knows where to look.”
—Scientific American

Excellent scientific approach to obtaining continuous and overall happiness.
By Ryan J. Dejonghe
HAPPINESS BY DESIGN seeks to take Paul Dolan’s training in economics and behavioral science and offer a unique approach to overall happiness not found in other of its same-shelf counterparts. This is an interesting approach, considering Dolan is working with Daniel Kahneman, who won the Nobel Prize in economics as a psychologist. (It must be nice to refer to a Nobel Prize winner as “Danny”.)

Dolan claims to make two distinguishing factors on the path to happiness: relatability and definition. Dolan speaks to his lower class upbringing and his current group of friends that are both college educated and those who are not. After reading this book, I’m not sure if he creates a completely relatable experience or not, but more on that later. As for the definition, Dolan states other books on happiness have never offered a definition of happiness. His definition is, “experiences of pleasure and purpose over time.” He later calls this a life “that contains lots of positive sentiments of pleasure and of purpose”, labeling it as “sentimental hedonism”.

My two favorite quotes in this book are: “Your happiness is determined by how you allocate your attention.” and, “If you are not as happy as you could be then you must be misallocating your attention.” Dolan’s method of bringing about happiness is a balance of pleasure and purpose, for as he writes, “If you are not as happy as you could be then you must be misallocating your attention.” The problem is that we “generally pay attention to what we think should make us happy rather than focusing on what actually does.”

I appreciate Dolan’s scientific-like approach, which is my main contention with books such as THE HAPPINESS PROJECT that feature more “feel good” statements and “it worked for me” statements. A lot of what Dolan offers resembles Rick Hanson’s book HARDWIRING HAPPINESS, which is one of the best I’ve read of the subject. Both this book and that book feature focused attention on everyday events.

There are hundreds of footnoted studies that Dolan uses to effect. By the time he wraps up, he presents ways to “decide, design, and do” that will organize your life around long standing happiness. In particular, Dolan shows how current happiness surveys capture a moment of response, such as posing for a camera, versus a more accurate capturing of happiness over time, such as video recording someone that isn’t posed and gives a more life-like representation.

The parts I would like more clearer or more defined research are the effects of: mindfulness, sleep, and happiness for the unemployed. Dolan believes, though not explicitly pointing to, books like THE POWER OF NOW by Eckhart Tolle offer obtainable happiness by at a cost of the mind’s System 2 effort (taken from Daniel Kahneman’s THINKING, FAST AND SLOW). Dolan writes that it is “easier and more effective to nudge system 1 than it is to shove system 2.” Dolan’s messages are interesting and remind me a lot of Daniel J. Levitin’s recent THE ORGANIZED MIND.

As for sleep, Dolan shows an interesting study comparing spiked happiness of those who stay up late versus the continuous overall happiness of those that forgo late-night television in order to get a full night’s sleep. As for unemployment, Dolan continuously shows studies how working and money both directly and indirectly affect happiness. On one hand Dolan speaks of the advantage of finding work via happiness, but on the other speaks of the depressiveness of unemployment. This shows me a slippery slope that needs more resolution (which I believe mindfulness or Hanson’s HARDWIRING HAPPINESS addresses).

Overall, HAPPINESS BY DESIGN is an excellent scientific approach to understanding how to obtain continuous overall happiness through simple organizational techniques. This book provides plenty of new insight through hundreds of studies and relatable material. While I would like more information on some of the presented material, there are plenty of footnotes and end-book references for me to follow-up on.

Thanks to Hudson Street Press and The Penguin Group for providing an electronic copy of this book for me to review.

Actively design your happiness
By bronx book nerd
This book makes the case that happiness is something you can achieve by becoming more conscious of what actually contributes to it and how. Specifically, Dolan says that day-to-day happiness is composed of pleasure and purpose - you don't want to just feel good, you also want to feel that you are doing good. With this mindset, you can tolerate short term burdens if you know that they are being suffered for a purpose. At the same time, pleasure must be included in the equation as it is necessary to feel happy. Dolan covers many of the ways that we obstruct our own happiness, usually unintentionally, because we are not aware of how our mind works. For example, we think we are going to be happy from getting things but that usually wears off quickly; at the same time, we do not give enough credit to the happiness of experiences, so we don't value them as much. So, we focus on accumulation rather than participation, to our own detriment. This and other examples are gathered from the burgeoning field of neuro- and behavioral economics (Daniel Kahnenam is Dolan's friend and mentor). Dolan proposes a three point plan - Decide, Design and Do, for each area where you feel you can achieve more happiness. For example if you want to improve your health, you can "Decide" to go the gym; "Design" by committing to do so with a gym buddy; and "Do" by actually going to the gym. The Design part is the one that I was most looking forward to. However, I actually found the few recommendations here somewhat weak and mundane. Also, the recommendations and exactly how to implement them either do not jump out at you or are somewhat unrealistic. For example, who you hang out with has a great deal to do with your own attitude and happiness. However, most of those we "hang out: with tends to be determine by our family members, our work colleagues and the neighborhoods we live in. There is limited room to design who you hang out with by selecting the individuals who make up these groups. I think a companion dose of Stoic practices would go well with those prescribed by Dolan. Though you can plan and design your happiness, life is right now rearing back its arm to throw you a curve ball. Better to also be prepared for that than to hope that life will only throw you a meatball, 65 mile per hour fastballs.

Good, but only in parts
By S. Gauria
The book is in 2 parts, which could roughly be described as Theory and Practice.

The first part talks about what happiness is, and draws a lot on the author's own research. The key takeaways are that pleasure and purpose are both key parts of happiness, and attention is a key component of transforming stimuli or circumstances into 'happiness'. This part is really good and well worth reading.

The second part is about specific things you could do to improve your happiness. This part is very unstructured, and the author has taken a 'kitchen-sink' approach where he suggests just about everything that you could do, liberally peppered with anecdotes from his own life. I found it hard to come away with any concrete ideas or takeaways from this section. This book would have been much stronger if this section had fewer but better grounded and better explained ideas.

Overall, it might be worth reading if you can get it from the library, but may not be the best book to buy, IMHO.

Pagan Rome and the Early Christians, by Stephen Benko

As perceived by the average Roman citizen, the early rites and behavior of Christians laid them open to charges of cannibalism, immorality, and the practice of magic and conspiring and fomenting rebellion aganst the state.

The early church fathers rejected these accusations and portrayed pagans as victims of misinformation or perpetrators of ill will. Benko proposes to give the pagans the benefit of the doubt and analyzes their charges against Christianity under the premise that they may have been right within the context of the times. He has provided a persuasively argued and refreshing―if controversial―perspective on the confrontation of the pagan and early Christian worlds.

We're not that different from ancient Romans
By Sandra Hunter
One of the things that was impressed upon me by this book is that Romans were horrified by the early Christians in much the same way many people in this day and age are horrified by groups with seemingly "different" ideas. To most ancient Romans the Christians were people who skulked around at night and performed cannibalism. To the more enlightened, who honestly tried to understand what it was that Christians believed, the Christian belief system still didn't make sense on a philosophical basis. This book teaches us that Christianity spooked a lot of ancient Romans because the worship of Roman gods was so tied to Roman patriotism. If you didn't worship the Roman gods then how could you be a good Roman? Despite this, Romans were amazingly tolerant of most other belief systems which adds even more weight to how radical early Christians had to have been.
This is a well-written, well-researched and interesting book. I think that perhaps inadvertently it is also a good book about human nature. In particular it reinforces the importance of keeping the church and the state separate.

Roman Perspective for Great Insights
By E. Pichon
Well worth a read if you are interested in early church history. By examining the early church from the Roman perspective, it turns the usual evil-Romans-persecuting-good-Christians narrative on its head. He basically argues, by citing contemporary writings, that the negative reaction of the Romans was based on moral, philosophical and ethical principals, and not knee-jerk hatred.

Rome
By N. Lynch
This book presents the view of early Christianity from the Roman side, by focusing on the work of several early writers and commentators. The insights are quite interesting and the view of Roman society is rather different from that one hears in Christian circles. I recommend the book, but wish it went into a bit more depth in places, and explained some things more fully.

The Secret History of Marvel Comics: Jack Kirby and the Moonlighting Artists at Martin Goodman's Empire, by Blake Bell, Michael J. Vassall

The untold story of the House of Ideas.

Marvel Comics is home to such legendary super-heroes as Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, all of whom have spun box office gold in the 21st century. But Marvel Comics has a secret history hidden in the shadows of these well-known franchises.

The Secret History of Marvel Comics digs back to the 1930s when Marvel Comics wasn't just a comic-book producing company. Marvel Comics owner Martin Goodman had tentacles into a publishing world that might have made that era’s conservative American parents lynch him on his front porch. Marvel was but a small part of Goodman’s publishing empire, which had begun years before he published his first comic book. Goodman mostly published lurid and sensationalistic story books (known as “pulps”) and magazines, featuring sexually-charged detective and romance short fiction, and celebrity gossip scandal sheets. And artists like Jack Kirby, who was producing Captain America for eight-year-olds, were simultaneously dipping their toes in both ponds.

The Secret History of Marvel Comics tells this parallel story of 1930s/40s Marvel Comics sharing offices with those Goodman publications not quite fit for children. The book also features a comprehensive display of the artwork produced for Goodman’s other enterprises by Marvel Comics artists such as Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Alex Schomburg, Bill Everett, Al Jaffee, and Dan DeCarlo, plus the very best pulp artists in the field, including Norman Saunders, John Walter Scott, Hans Wesso, L.F. Bjorklund, and Marvel Comics #1 cover artist Frank R. Paul. Goodman’s magazines also featured cover stories on celebrities such as Jackie Gleason, Elizabeth Taylor, Liberace, and Sophia Loren, as well as contributions from famous literary and social figures such as Isaac Asimov, Theodore Sturgeon, and L. Ron Hubbard.

These rare pieces of comic art, pulp and magazine history will open the door to Marvel Comics’ unseen history.

A Good Read About Pulps, But Not Really A "History of Marvel Comics"
By ConclusionsDrawn
I enjoyed this book, but it isn’t really a “History of Marvel Comics,” secret or otherwise. Rather, it details how the original owner of what became Marvel Comics in the 1960s, Martin Goodman, got his start publishing pulps in the 1930s, and later magazines. By all accounts comic books were a very small part of Goodman’s publishing business, one in which he took little or no interest until Spider-Man became a hit in the mid-1960s. He sold the business in 1968.

Goodman is portrayed as a cheap and unethical publisher of shlock (and frequently reprints) who sought unapologetically to capitalize on evolving popular trends in pulp and magazine publishing. Martin Goodman published his periodicals through a dizzying array of ever-changing shell companies, a not uncommon business practice in the industry at the time apparently, and yet another way for bottom-of-the-barrel publishers to avoid paying creators.

The book’s authors chronicle in almost scholarly detail the ever changing roster of titles, the convoluted issue number sequencing, and the seemingly endless array of fly-by-night publishing companies with various business addresses in Manhattan in Martin Goodman’s little publishing business, with a heavy emphasis on the pulps he published in the 1930s and 1940s.
The conceit is that Goodman’s unethical business practices, and lack of regard for the creators whose work he published as well as the readers who bought his periodicals, carried over into Marvel Comics in the 1960s. But that aspect of the narrative is barely touched on, and only in the final pages of the 100 page history of Goodman’s publishing business that starts this 300 page book. (The remaining 200 pages of this 300 page book detail, artist-by-artist, the many famous comic book artists who got their start in the 1940s doing work for Goodman’s pulps. Most of those 200 pages reprint this long lost artwork.)

I found myself asking rhetorically many times while reading this book “why” various things happened they way they did. The various titles and issue numbers of Goodman’s various pulps are laid out in the almost fetishistic detail characteristic of a devoted collector. But the human reasons “why” events occurred in the narrative are rarely addressed and when they are, only in passing. As one example, the book touts that it explains the little-known ‘real’ reason why Ditko and Kirby left Marvel Comics in the 1960s, and ascribes that to Martin Goodman’s unethical business dealings with them, as opposed to disputes with Stan Lee. But the book never explains why, if that were true, Kirby came back to Goodman’s comic book company in the late 1950s (and did work for him for another decade, co-creating the Marvel Universe in the 1960s with Stan Lee) despite having had a bitter falling out with Goodman in 1941 over royalty payments for “Captain America Comics.” And it never explains why, if that were so, Ditko would go on to do work for Goodman’s short-lived Atlas Comics in the mid-1970s.

As a book about a comparatively minor, ethically challenged publisher of pulps in the 1930s and 1940s, with an intriguing link to Marvel Comics, this book makes fascinating reading. But it’s not really a “History of Marvel Comics.”

Not much about comics, but interesting anyway
By William Henley
The title of this book is somewhat misleading. It's not really a history (secret or otherwise) of Marvel Comics, though it is of interest to readers who are already familiar with Marvel history. You won't learn much that's new here about the origins of charactrs like Captain America (though he's on the cover), Spider-Man or the X-Men. What this is, is a history of the non-comics publishing enterprises of Martin Goodman, the man who between 1939 and 1968 owned and published the comics line that came to be known as Marvel. Goodman got started in the publishing business in 1933 with a pulp magazine, not a comic book, and continued publishing pulps alongside comics through the 1940's and 50's. (That first pulp was a Western, and the book suggests Goodman had a lifelong affection for that genre. Though it's not specifically said in the book, this might help explain why Marvel continued publishing Western comics through the 1960's and early 70's after Westerns mostly fell out of fashion.) And he later branched out into other types of down-scale magazines, such as girlie photo magazines, true-confessions mags, and many others. Some of the same people who worked on Goodman's comics also did work for the pulps, and the fortunes of the non-comics publications had side effects on the comics. The biggest example, probably, was in 1957-58 when Goodman lost his distribution company and signed with Independent News. owned by National-DC Comics, to distribute his magazines. Though Independent agreed to distribute a shrunken line of comic books for Goodman, they were mainly interested in making money distributing his other publications. If Goodman had been a comics-only publisher, DC might have refused to distribute a rival and the "Marvel Age" would have been strangled in its cradle. (I've often wondered if DC management later rued the day when they made that deal with Goodman and threw a lifeline to their future arch-rival.)

This book does not present a flattering picture of Martin Goodman in terms of his professional practices and ethics or as a creative mind. Goodman's general practice with his pulps and other magazines, as with his comics, was not to blaze new trails, but to find out what was selling well for other publishers and to flood the market with imitations. (Though the book suggests that Goodman's company did originate one major magazine category-- the "men's sweat" adventure magazine.) The authors suggest Goodman had little concern for creating a quality product, or for treating his staffers, writers and artists fairly (though he could be generous when an impulse took him). When Goodman's line of comics became Marvel and revolutionized comics for the future, it was thanks to Stan Lee and the artists, mainly Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, and in spite of Goodman rather than because of him. And the authors suggest that when Ditko and then Kirby quit Marvel, it was not primarily because of disputes with Stan Lee's editorial policy, as is sometimes suggested, but because of their resentment of Goodman's publishing policies and refusal to pay them adequately for their wildly successful creations.

Speaking of Goodman's ethics as a publisher, perhaps his low point was his involvement with a genre of pulp magazine now known as the "shudder pulps". We sometimes hear that the present day is a uniquely degenerate era of popular culture with excesses of sex and violence that would never have been tolerated in an earlier era, but the sidelight in this book about Goodman's " shudder pulps" of the late 1930's suggests it isn't necessarily so. These magazines didn't contain just garden-variety horror stories, but "frankly sadistic" blends of sex and violence, as with a story and illustration in which half-naked women are thrown onto beds of spikes to bleed to death for the entertainment of a jaded nightclub audience. I'm opposed to virtually all censorship, but if I saw something like this in a present-day publication, it would strain my principles. (The book SECRET IDENTITY by Craig Yoe reveals that Joe Shuster, during his impoverished post-Superman days, was involved in doing art for a similar series of bondage-fetish publicatios. But those seem to have been semi-underground publicatios sold under the counter. These "shudder pulps" seem to have been sold on the regular stands alongside other pulps, at least until a crackdown by the New York City government.)

Over half of this book is devoted to a gallery of pulp-magazine illustrations drawn by "the moonlighting artists of Marvel Comics" -- most extensively Jack Kirby and Joe Simon during the early days of their careers, but also Alex Schomburg (best known in comics for his incredibly crowded covers, but he was also responsible for many of those grotesque "shudder" illustrations), Bill Everett, Carl Burgos, Joe Maneely and many others. This makes the book a unique resource for art aficionados who can see here artwork by Kirby and the others that would otherwise be vanished and inaccessible except for a few pulp collectors. This, and the detailed look at an earlier era of magazine publishing, makes this book a fascinating read even if it isn't really very much about Marvel Comics.

Never 'Nuff said!
By Ronault D. Trowbridge
I've read several books about the triumphant rise of Marvel comics, but the most interesting part of the company history, is the way the artists who helped create the iconic characters were mistreated. This book delves deep into the shady business practices of Martin Goodman & others of his ilk. Not to mention the struggling artists, who only wanted to provide for families & maybe make a name for themselves. Plenty of pictures of great art & informative bios on the men who created the characters many love.

Incredibly Empowering--Insightful--and Just What Tender Codependent Hearts Need
By Lisa A. Romano
I am the adult child of two adult children of alcoholics. When my marriage fell apart and I went into therapy, I was baffled when the therapist said, "No Lisa, you're not crazy, but you are severely codependent."

Because my parents didn't drink, I was confused by my therapist's diagnosis.

And then I read books like Codependent No More and eventually stumbled upon this blue book.

I attended my first codependents group--shy--intimidated--and unsure as to what I might find. I had been bullied my entire life by my adult child of an alcoholic mother. I thought her obsessive need to control every thing I did, including how often I changed my underwear when I was a little girl--was the result of a flaw in me. Her inability to trust me--or to be nurturing towards me--made me feel like I was ill--bad--flawed--broken--and never enough.

I was well into my thirties, depressed, the mother of three small children and in the throws of a excruciating divorce before I began to understand how lost I was inside of my own being.

What I learned to understand was, that codependency isn't like cancer. You can't look at it on a cat scan and say "There it is--now let's go operate and take it out,"

Codependency is us...it is the way we have been programmed by our caretakers--to disown self--to loathe self--to question self--to worry more about others than we do ourselves.

I have turned many of my coaching clients onto this book because I believe so strongly in the enlightening as well as empowering messages about codependency and ultimately--life--that it has to offer.

This book is full of personal stories of triumph and human courage. It will inspire you, and even make you cry. It will warm your heart, as it opens your mind...And if you are willing--it will heal your soul too...

Namaste...

A tried and true essential recovery tool
By knitter4years
A must for people in recovery. Adult Child and codependence are the core issues of all other compulsive/addictive behaviors. This book contains the wisdom of many who have walked out of the unmaneagability of our old ways of interacting with ourselves and others. It's a relief to learn we didn't do this to ourselves, and we aren't born this day.

Recovery is a beautiful word. When a recovery expedition is done in the world, it is to retrieve something of great value. Sunk ships, buried treasures, lost people. Twelve step recovery takes us back to find our authentic selves, retrieve our abandoned parts, heal, and learn the skills we didn't develop in our formative years. This book was critical to my recovery, and I will return to it year after year, because codependence is a deeply rooted compulsive disease. I never want to go back to the pain of hitting bottom again. So I work it like I'm worth it.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-Little Witch is back and she wants to go to school. Frustrated by her continual good behavior, Mother Witch wants her daughter to stay home and learn to be bad from her relatives. When Little Witch promises to be bad if she is allowed to go to school, her mother agrees. Despite her pledge, Little Witch is a good role model for enthusiastic cooperation in the classroom, as she participates in activities, performs her assigned job, and even gives the other children a ride on her broomstick. At the end of the day, she admits that she didn't hold up her end of the bargain. Her mother reminds her, "It's bad to break a promise." Beginning readers will find sufficient picture clues, repetitive language, short sentences, and action to support their reading efforts. They will also get a kick out of the twist of semantics at the end of this lighthearted story, and will enjoy the appealing watercolor-and-pen illustrations that appear throughout.

Fun book
By Krista -F
I bought this book and two other Little Witch books to read to my daughter when she was only around the age of four. The story held her attention from front to back. Once she started to read on her own around the age of five she would ask to read the book with me. At the age of seven she still likes to read this book. Little Witch books make a nice gift also. If parents want to read books to their kids then I would have no problem giving this book to a four or five year old up to an eight year old.

Fun and educational!
By Lorilyn Tenney
The Little Witch series of books were ones that my mom read to my sister & I when we were young. Very few of the toddler books stay with you like these did. When my mom & I started talking about remembering these books, I looked on Amazon & found them for my 4 year old daughter. Now I read them to her & she loves them! She LOVES how Little Witch gets in trouble for things like reading books, cleaning her room & making her bed. She isn't too young to get the irony of it & thinks it's hilarious. We bought them because it's nearing Halloween and she's all into anything scary, but these are great books that can be read all year round.

Science fiction, more than any other film genre, allows cinema to exhibit its own distinctive matters of expression. Whether these be the state-of-the-art special effects technologies of 2001: A Space Odyssey, or the symbolic imagery of ruined cityscapes in Blade Runner, they allow the spectator to experience the totality of the audiovisual thrill.

While this remains in many ways the core defining feature of the genre, recent trends in the study of science fiction cinema have seen a shift of focus away from the specifically cinematic towards the more broadly cultural. New technologies of communication and vision, revolutionary developments in the delivery and reception of moving-image media, the increasing importance of the notion of space: all are forcing new and different ways of thinking about the genre.

Alien Zone II presents some of the most exciting new voices in the current debates. A companion volume to Alien Zone, it continues to pursue the critical and theoretical issues opened up in the earlier book and energetically explores fresh territory with an eye which is both reflective and interventionist: visionary cities, psycho-cybernetics, internet fandom, the convergence of science fiction literature and science action film, the body and its limits are just some of the subjects brought under its gaze.

Amazon.com Review
In his poem "Ozymandias," Percy Bysshe Shelley imagined discovering a stone torso from millennia past and reading the (ironic) inscription, "Look on me, ye mighty, and dread." According to most of the writers in this probing collection of essays, each generation gets hooked on the utopian and dystopian visions of the future for the same reason--because they offer the chilling insight that our world is the fragments of futures to come. Since Georges Melies's Voyage to the Moon (1902), science fiction movies have speculated about what life in other places and times would be like. Under editor Annette Kuhn's direction, the contributors to Alien Zone 2 have taken it upon themselves to think out loud about how "space" works in sci-fi movies like Brazil, Blade Runner, Total Recall, Metropolis, and the Alien series. The way these films structure cities, conceptualize culture, and imagine psyches generally falls, it turns out, into a category that UCLA professor Vivian Sobchak calls "future noir," featuring terrifying visions of cities in which a faceless multinational power sits atop thrillingly disenfranchised lumps of humanity. Distressing as this scenario sounds, most of the writers take it as an opportunity to reinvigorate our sense of the possibilities of the present, whether political, aesthetic, or otherwise. Writing about race, women, cyborgs, or consumer-culture, they key in on the genius in these movies that has at once invented a three-dimensional world and performed a kind of radical keratotomy on our own vision of things. Some academic jargon in the collection may be off-putting, but razor-sharp insights are here in abundance. --Lyall Bush

Sci-Fi and motion pictures...
By Michael Valdivielso
This book deals with science fiction and the cinema and how they helped each other develop over the decades. With chapters on bodybuilders, the internet, cities, crazy machines, and how new technology has changed how we make movies and how the movies present technology you can't help but look at science fiction in the cinema with a completely different light.

A Quick Review of Powerful Principles
By A Customer
I found this little book a delightful read, and skimmed through it in an afternoon. Dr Rubino covers many of the fundamental principles common to most "self-help" and motivational books, often with a creative twist. At the same time, he moves through the chapters so quickly and briefly, that there is very little substance here. The typical chapter is about 3 pages long, including a brief quote, a statement of the principle being covered, and then a page or so of the author's personal notes and commentary. A strong point of the book is that each chapter includes an action section with several questions designed to help the reader take immediate action in their own lives. Two weaknesses of the book are that Dr Rubino extensively uses language unique to the personal development "movement", and the book seems designed to promote both his own books, and the programs of his partners, with numerous references throughout the book and in the endnotes.
Over-all, a pleasant book, with many positive reminders to take personal responsibility for my life and use the resources available to me, but not a very meaty book, and certainly not a profound one.

The most complete personal development book ever
By Harvey Walfish
This book is the most complete book from A to Z covering the topic of personal development. Dr. Rubino explains the different steps in a detailed, yet simple process. It gets you thinking about who you are and who you want to become through"change". His use of quotations of many famous people through the years, share with you that personal development has been around for many years and that it is highly under utilized. In todays society where its use is becoming more prevalent, Dr. Rubino's book is an easy to read text. If one is up to it, and I highly recommend this, one should do all of the suggested exercises at the end of the chapters. If you're into personal development and "change" then this is the book for you.

The Power to Succeed
By Don & Mary Lou Vollmer
This book is filled with life enhancing ~ contents ~ growth experiences ~ developmental chapters. These meaningful chapters can be utilized in incremental stages. The way we utilize the book is to read it all first in its entirety. Then taking a principle one at a time and utilizing the information on how you can enhance your life as well as those around you, we use and practice one principle a week with a small focus group. You can gain immeasurably by putting into practice the principles, while increasing the effectiveness of the group. This book has been a tremendous growth experience for us, and we would highly recommend it for anyone truly interested in self improvement.
