Basic with too many mistakes

I have used this book this year for my Spanish 1 class. To say the least, it is extremely basic. In other words, it is not for the person who wants to learn a lot of Spanish fast. For a classroom pace, it is very slow, but at least it is interesting with the Telehistoria (a story line throughout the book used to catch the students' interest). Also, Avancemos has quite a few mistakes throughout the book. For example: Dónde es... should be Dónde está! Also, many instances, the student edition does not match up with the teacher edition. I do not recommend this book for an advanced class because of its slow pace.

Best book!!

I am a homeschooling mom, and I have used many different textbooks. In my opinion, this is one of the best textbooks out there. It is very easy to understand, and if you complete all (or most) of the exercises at the end of each chapter, you really understand the concepts of that chapter and are prepared to move on to the next. I definitely see my homeschooler struggling with the first few exercises, but by the time he is done with them, he completely understands.

Also, there are 3 "Telehistorias" in each chapter. This means there are 3 scenes with dialogue that you can read and/or listen to on their website. The interesting thing about it is that the Telehistorias involve the same people in each chapter and it is a storyline that continues throughout the book. When you get to the Telehistorias, it is a nice reprieve from the learning (even though you are still learning by reading them) and while they may be a bit corny, we always enjoy them.

Fun way to learn Spanish.

We used this book at a small school for Spanish I. The students loved it. We used the exercises in the book for practice speaking and the Cuaderno exercises for written work. (There are also exercises that can printed out if you buy the CD version of the book at Holt/McDougal.) The website at w[...] has short grammar cartoons that the students really enjoyed. We had looked at different Spanish programs for a long time before finding this one. It was perfect for our group of students.

Alan Downs, PhD, is a clinical psychologist practicing in Beverly Hills, California. The former CEO of Michael’s House Treatment Center, Downs now maintains a thriving private psychotherapy practice and an intensive outpatient addiction program.

Important but flawed

This book, particularly the first third (as other reviewers have noted) and the lengthy second edition add-on (Chapter 14) is a good starting point in understanding the origins and life-long impact of gay shame and how to overcome it. The author's three stage model for how gay men experience/deal with shame (overwhelm, compensation, authenticity) is useful and occasionally eye-opening as are his observations of how shame at each stage can be "foreclosed" on (ignored, buried, etc.) or healthfully resolved. The solid practical advice offered in the aforementioned Chapter 14 ("Skills for Living an Authentic Life), while being tailored to the gay male experience, could be of benefit to a much wider audience.

The main flaw with "The Velvet Rage" -- and it's a stunner -- is that it focuses almost exclusively on only one type of gay man, i.e. the urban, successful, materialistic, attractive, sexually promiscuous, well-traveled, fabulous "powergay". Life examples from the less-than-fabulous, i.e. rural/suburban gay men, unsuccessful or non-materialistic gay men, poor and middle-class gay men, ordinary-looking gay men, gay homebodies, senior gay men, disabled gay men, gay men of color, and many others are almost nowhere to be found, likely because these people appear largely absent from the author's social and professional circles (which he talks about a great deal, almost to the point of bragging at times). Though surely unintentional, this is a terrible oversight for a book that seeks to provide psychological support to a marginalized minority, and I suspect a fair number of gay men reading this book will feel further alienated in some way as a result.

I would still recommend "The Velvet Rage", as it is vitally important for gay men to understand the toxic shame that lies at the core of our personal and collective psychological shadows as well as acquire the psychological tools necessary to make positive changes in our lives. Just don't expect to see your life experiences adequately reflected if you're an average gay Joe.

Highly recommended!

I tried several books to start learning FEM but was never satisfied. Some of them were overloaded with theory or essentially no theory and all software application. Finally I come across this one! A very good book to learn FEM subject for the person who already has basic knowledge of mechanics, strength of materials and matrix calculus. It's really clearly written with a very good and detailed explanation of discussed topics. All the chapters are followed by numerous examples to be solved by the reader. I was able to deal with them using the equations and examples given in regular text. The book is "software-independent" - it's not oriented towards any specific FEM package; more stress is put on general FEM theory and exemplary applications. There are several handy appendixes which helps you work through matrix calculus, equations of elasticity & solution techniques for linear algebraic eqs. Highly recommended!

I hate this book.

This is one of the most difficult textbooks to read that I've ever encountered. I think some of that has to do with the fact that the material is hard to begin with, but even still: The book constantly references equations by number (eq 5.14) and does so dozens of pages removed. That alone is super obnoxious.

Dr. Hutton was my professor for M.E. 474 [Finite Element Analysis] elective counting towards a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. We worked off his notes in 1992 before he got his work published. Brilliant man and no less quality of technical publication.

The 4th edition (1975) is a classic that contains information that is still relevant today. We used this book for many years to teach medical students about medical parasitology. I find myself still referring to it. Many advances have been made since the last publication, so interested readers should refer to a more recent text such as Parasitic Diseases by Despommier, Gwadz, Hotez and Knirsch.
