Innovative approach to an ancient art.

When I was stationed in Japan during the late 1940's I had some Jiu Jitsu training and I remember it as being largely about holds,locks and takedowns;the objective being to get your opponent to use his weight and leverage against himself.It looks as though the art has evolved into a combination of judo and karate techniques,with a fair degree of emphasis on street defense situations.I've never encountered a book that places such emphasis on kicks to the groin!The throws and holds are expertly demonstrated and the kicks are executed with vigor and thrust,which is how they should be.At my age judo is a bit much for me but I did manage to get a considerable amount out of this book.It should be noted that this is but one in a series of three;the first dealing with students of the white to yellow belt level and the third book being a black belt syllabus.All come highly recommended.

Excellent instruction manual for ju-jitsu enthusiasts.....

Earlier works by Robert Clark have suffered from the 'dark photograph' syndrome found in many martial arts books.
This publication shows the improvement that can be achieved with first-class camera work and proper use of placing Tori and Uke in light and dark Gi (clothing for practise).
Anyone who is making a serious attempt to improve their range of techniques for grading purposes etc. would do well to purchase this book as it is an easy reference to throws, ground techniques and finishes.
I have also purchased the White to Green Belt and the Black belt publications in the same series, which are equally high quality publications.
Buy these books, they are worth every penny in saving your practise time and improving your rate of progress.

Excellent training manual

My first book on jiu-jitsu was over 40 years ago with the great E.J. Harrison's classic book on the subject in an early 60s or late 50s edition. Jiu-jitsu books have come a long way since Harrison's time, and sensei Clark follows in that great tradition with this very well-written and beautifully illustrated and photographed instructional book on this phase of the curriculum. Very clear photos illustrate the techniques, accompanied by clear and concise descriptions in the text.
One of my main interests is hold and lock reversals and counters, and I was pleased to see seven of them included in this syllabus, four for armlocks and three for choke holds. I tend to come at this from the Chin Na end of the spectrum but I have great respect for the jiu-jitsu aspects of it as well, and they should be taught more often than they are.
One other thing that is different from many jiu-jitsu and judo books of the past is the emphasis on classical karate kicks, punches, and strikes. Sensei Clark must have some training there, over and above the usual atemi-waza training since he has quite nice classical technique, being a karate instructor myself. No doubt the pervasive influence of karate and TKD have had some effect over the years on jiu-jitsu training as well.
Students of the art, especially those in the WJJF, should find this a useful companion to their training with many helpful tips and info on all the white belt to green belt techniques.

"Alif Baa" introduces about 150 basic vocabulary words, including social greetings and politeness formulae, most of which are common to standard Arabic and one or more dialects. The book and CDs focus on reading skills, aural recognition, and oral production through extensive drills and accompanying videos. Including authentic materials from newspapers and magazines and skits filmed in Egypt, as well as an English-Arabic glossary, "Alif Baa" lays the groundwork for the rest of the Al-Kitaab language program.

A superior introduction to a potentially daunting task

This book is by far the best introduction to the Arabic writing system that I've been able to find. The accompanying CD's do what no other books dedicated to teaching the Arabic alphabet do, which is teach the sounds of Arabic at the very same time it teaches you individual letters. "Teach Yourself Arabic Script" for example only describes the particular sounds, which can be very different from English sounds and which one usually needs to hear in order to produce.

"Alif Baa" is also bound on the right-hand side, so the reader instantly gets used to the feel of a book which starts on what seems like the back page. Also, the size of the letters when they are introduced is fairly large so that the reader can see the shape of each letter and their sometimes confusing details, since Arabic letters are often variations on a particular theme. The page layouts are neat and uncluttered, the typeography on even the smaller-printed text is crisp, and write-on lines for student answers are ample.

Also, it is not necessary to purchase the videotapes to make full use of this text, as one reviewer complained. In each chapter there is a page dedicated to a cultural note which is illustrated through video scenes, but this is only an introduction to basic conversation in the Cairene dialect and not an instrinsic part of the book's main task, which is to teach the shapes and sounds of the Arabic alphabet. Contact information for the publisher is given in the back, and the answer key might be obtained from the press, I haven't tried yet. Once a reader has diligently worked through Alif Baa, she or he will be able to jump right in to any basic Arabic course and indeed have a major advantage, since none offer as thorough an introduction to reading and writing Arabic is this title.

Good book, bought it for a class

This is a pretty good book, although I think that they could have had a clearer, more extensive vocabulary list. They need to provide a definition everytime they use a word (which they don't always do) so that many of the words they included had no definition - and I only knew what they were after asking my Arabic teacher. Also the DVD is a little incomplete - it didn't have all the vocab words nor defintions either. However, it is a very good book for learning some basic pronunciation rules, and it's very good for teaching how to write the Arabic alphabet. All in all, a very good book for learning the basics of the alphabet, but other books are needed to learn vocabulary or conversation.

Abandoned by his father, neglected by his mother, shuttled between foster homes and a boys ranch for most of his formative years, a young man refuses to succumb to the fate that the world says should be his. Born the second of five children to a woman who not once had a name to write in the blank space left for father on her children's birth certificates, Alton Carter does not mince words as he describes a childhood full of violence and hunger and isolation. Early on, Alton decides he wants a "normal life" even if that means standing up to abusive relatives and being teased by his siblings and cousins. Along the way, he keeps an eye out for those who might help lighten the load, never losing hope that such people exist.

About the Author
A former foster child and police officer, Alton Carter is the director of youth ministries for the First United Methodist Church of Stillwater, Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University. The father of two sons, Kelton and Colin, he loves spending time with his family, working with youngsters, and fishing. He makes his home in Stillwater, with his wife, Kristin. This is his first book.

An amazing story of survival and overcoming horrible odds. This book is of his life as a child through high school; however, because we know of this author as a strong, respected, outgoing, productive adult and influential community leader, it is even more remarkable to us that he has been able to rise far above the mistreatment he received growing up.

This true story of the author's childhood and youth filled with abuse and neglect is appalling, heart sickening, an eye opener to what some children have to endure. However, it is also an amazing, inspiring, story of determination to rise above childhood adversity of the cruelest kind to become a compassionate, positive, Christian role model and advocate for youth today. Brace yourself for anger and tears followed by respect, hope and faith with this page turner!!

Amazing.

Im only 13 years old, and i think that this is truly an amazing book. My whole class read it, and there was nobody who had negative feelings towards it. I recommend this book to anybody who has been bullied, abused, or felt like nobody cared. Alton's story will change you.

Its a Must Have

This is a must-have...but it would be nice to see COLOR pictures, maybe even slightly larger pictures in general. The detail could definitely be more helpful. I understand it just suppose to give you an idea of the process, but lots of mechanic newbies depend on these manuals and it would be nice to offer a clearer view of whats being shown. Its a must-have so we can't complain too much. But it would be a great idea to offer a 'Premium' manual. One that Does offer larger pictures, maybe More pictures, and added input/tips/detail on the most in-depth topics. Still its a must have!

It's Just OK

Haynes manuals are entertaining; the grainy black-and-white photos, the grubby hands... This is full of semi-useless information for things I'll never do, totally ignores convertibles, and uses repair procedures way more complicated than necessary. Supplement this with you-tube, and it's OK, but not great. I mostly got it as a security blanket, I'm in the habit of buying manuals for every vehicle I have. This one, though, sets a new low bar for Haynes. if nothing else, the cheap paper is probably pretty absorbent.

My most used reference

Ever since getting this text shortly after it came out I have referenced it far more than any of my other laser/optics books. I am especially pleased with the author's treatment of Gaussian optics and ray tracing. The only place it lacks is in some spectroscopic applications. It would have been nice to see a section on mode matching into an optical cavity, also.

This book, along with Lasers by Siegman, are the best books on lasers out right now. It has definitely been worth the money. Basic enough for a novice, but thorough enough for a practicing professional. You cant go wrong with this book

A great book for beginners and professionals

As an Optics Ph.D., I have studied from many different books written by different authors with different backgrounds. When it comes to Lasers, this book definitely makes the top 3 reference books (together with Siegman and Svelto).

This book distinguishes itself from similar ones in two major aspects. First one is the very well written Chapters 2 and 3, where the author introduces the matrix approach for cavity design. It is extremely useful for anyone who is working with free space lasers, and this book covers all the information and derivations for this powerful and practical approach which many other books underrate. The second aspect is the overall organization and the style of the book (easy to follow derivations and clear explanations) which make this book ideal for self-learning students.

If you are a beginner in laser physics, or a professional who is building lasers, you will find very useful and complete information in this book.

Very entertaining Roman thriller

The second in this new Roman series sits within a pretty crowded market and some very well-known authors. I enjoyed the first book and this follow up is just as good.

Young and slightly naive Cassius Corbulo is an Imperial agent, not by choice, more by circumstance. He is smart but no great sword fighter and in many situations lacks confidence or gravitas which does make a refreshing change. In this book he continues to be aided by his servant Sumo (and again the author avoids the trap of them treating each-other as equals) and a taciturn ex Gladiator who is along as a bodyguard. The three of them are on the trail of some stolen treasure and an Imperial Banner that must be recovered.

So we share the adventures of our trio as they doggedly follow the trail of theft, murder and treachery.

It works on a number of levels as the characters have depth and, especially in the case of Cassius, have their flaws that they manage through. In addition the dynamics between the main three characters is always entertaining and this helpd make this a fun and entertaining romp.

Not what I expected, but a great read!

They say not to judge a book by its cover. This is not a sword and glory novel, it is more along the lines of espionage or mystery and it really works well. In this second of the series we see the main protagonist Cassius fleshed out and while not exactly James Bond of the Legionary set, it still had me engrossed throughout. Brown also introduces another character, the bodyguard former gladiator who works well in the tale. The ancient city of Antioch is brought to life and could almost be considered a main character too as it is richly woven into the second half of the book. Overall an enjoyable, comfortable way to spend some hours being transported back in time... Can't wait to dive into the next in the series, The Far Shore, as soon as I click Send!

A new Roman series that's thoroughly entertaining

This exciting new series stands-out within a highly competitive, crowded genre alongside authors such as Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow and Conn Iggulden to name but a few. Unlike the merciless warrior `hero' figure of Cassius in the majority of fiction, here the author portrays this icon in a new light and altogether different angle. The slant taken on the Roman fighter is one of secret service as a spy; an entirely original concept that's unexpected and intriguing. This detective type story takes you on a thrilling adventure with epic battles and treasure hunts, reminiscent of "The Eagle" versus a contemporary crime saga! Full of twists & turns in the plot, shocking secrets and unforeseen unfolding events...I can predict this series becoming something of a sensation.

It's ultimately the characters that make this gripping tale so fascinating to read and colourful - from Cassius' servant Simo, his bodyguard Indavara and the ex-gladiator. This tantalizing trio on the trail for the Imperial banner were full of depth, and I loved their interaction amongst themselves throughout the book. Murder and treachery within an authentic, atmospheric setting makes this historical novel a winner in my mind and a sure-fire success as a sequel! Although this is part of a series it is also a book that likewise can be read as a `stand alone' novel.

Book 2 in the Agent of Rome series is a spectacular story and one that I would highly recommend to fans of this genre, as something new and highly imaginative. Rich backdrops and likeable characters make this unusual tale something truly unforgettable. I am so pleased to have won a copy of Nick Brown's book {through a GoodReads, first-read giveaway} and I look forward to reading and discovering more of his work.

Koti and Young Are Brilliant!

These are excellent origami designs by two of the leading authors. The book is well organized and easy to use in any language. The diagrams are beautifully rendered and clear. I am delighted by this original and valuable addition.
