Shunmyo Masuno, Japan's leading garden designer, is at once Japan's most highly acclaimed landscape architect and an 18th-generation Zen Buddhist priest, presiding over daily ceremonies at the Kenkoji Temple in Yokohama. He is celebrated for his unique ability to blend strikingly contemporary elements with the traditional design vernacular. He has worked in ultramodern urban hotels and in some of Japan's most famous classic gardens. In each project, his work as a designer of landscape architecture is inseparable from his Buddhist practice. Each becomes a Zen garden, "a special spiritual place where the mind dwells."

This beautiful book, illustrated with more than 400 drawings and color photographs, is the first complete retrospective of Masuno's work to be published in English. It presents 37 major gardens around the world in a wide variety of types and settings: traditional and contemporary, urban and rural, public spaces and private residences, and including temple, office, hotel and campus venues. Masuno achieved fame for his work in Japan, but he is becoming increasingly known internationally, and in 2011 completed his first commission in the United States which is shown here.

Zen Gardens, divided into three chapters, covers: "Traditional Zen Gardens," "Contemporary Zen Gardens" and "Zen Gardens outside Japan." Illustrated with photographs and architectural plans or sketches, each Zen garden design is described and analyzed by author Mira Locher, herself an architect and a scholar well versed in Japanese culture.

Celebrating the accomplishments of a major, world-class designer, Zen Gardens also serves as something of a master class in Japanese garden design and appreciation: how to perceive a Japanese garden, how to understand one, even how to make one yourself. About the Author
Mira Locher is an architect and professor who works in both the U.S. and Japan. She holds degrees from Smith College and the University of Pennsylvania. She worked for Team Zoo Atelier Mobile in Japan for seven years before setting up an architectural practice, Kajika Architecture, in partnership with Takayuki Murakami in the U.S. She is an Associate Professor at the College of Architecture & Planning at the University of Utah. She is the author of Traditional Japanese Architecture: An Exploration of Elements and Forms and Super Potato Design: The Complete Works of Takashi Sugimoto: Japan's Leading Interior Designer.

Two parts

The book is divided into two parts. The first part of the book is focused on traditional gardens while the latter deals with more contemporary designs. Some of the work is reminescent of that of Mirei Shigemori but with somewhat greater emphasis on the stone and gravel hardscapes. Many of the 'gardens' are perhaps better described as architectural landscapes dominated by the extensive use of very large boulders and stone walls. This is not a book for those interested in creating their own gardens but is a useful library addition for those with broader interests in modern Japanese garden design.

A must have/read for those interested in Japanese Gardens. Masuno creates both traditional and contemporary gardens of great beauty and peace.

Krishna G. Palepu is the Ross Graham Walker Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean for International Development at the Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Prior to assuming his current administrative position, Professor Palepu held other positions at the school, including Senior Associate Dean, Director of Research, and Chair, Accounting and Control Unit. Professor Palepu's current research and teaching activities focus on strategy and governance. In the area of strategy, his recent focus has been on the globalization of emerging markets. In the area of corporate governance, Professor Palepu's work focuses on how to make corporate boards more effective, and on improving corporate disclosure. Professor Palepu teaches these topics in several HBS programs aimed at members of corporate boards: "How to make corporate boards more effective, "Audit Committees in the new era of governance, "Compensation Committees: Preparing the challenges ahead." Professor Palepu has done extensive research on mergers and acquisitions and corporate disclosure. Based on this work, he coauthored the book, Business Analysis and Valuation: Text and Cases, which won the American Accounting Association's Wildman Award for its impact on management practice, as well as the Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award for its impact on academic research. This book, translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish, is widely used in leading MBA programs all over the world. It is accompanied by a business analysis and valuation software model published by the Harvard Business School Publishing Company. Professor Palepu has a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration.

Paul M. Healy is James R. Williston Professor of Business Administration, and Unit Head, Accounting and Management, at Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Professor Healy joined Harvard Business School as a Professor of Business Administration in 1997. Professor Healy received his B.C.A. Honors (1st Class) in Accounting and Finance from Victoria University, New Zealand in 1977, his M.S. in Economics from the University of Rochester in 1981, his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Rochester in 1983, and is a New Zealand CPA. In New Zealand, Professor Healy worked for Arthur Young and ICI. Prior to joining Harvard, Professor Healy spent fourteen years on the faculty at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, where he received awards for teaching excellence in 1991, 1992, and 1997. He is the co-author of one of the leading financial analysis textbooks, Business Analysis & Valuation. In 1993-94 he served as Deputy Dean at the Sloan School, and in 1994-95 he visited London Business School and Harvard Business School. Professor Healy's research includes studies of the role and performance of financial analysts, how firms' disclosure strategies affect their costs of capital, the performance of merging firms after mergers, and managers' financial reporting decisions. His work has been published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial Economics. In 1990, his article "The Effect of Bonus Schemes on Accounting Decisions," published in Journal of Accounting and Economics, was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award. His text Business Analysis & Valuation was awarded the AICPA/AAA's Wildman Medal for contributions to the practice in 1997 and the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award in 1998

Victor L. Bernard, who passed away November 14, 1995, was Director of the Paton Accounting Center at the University of Michigan and Director of Research for the American Accounting Association.

Useful if cumbersome

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".
This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.
The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.
I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.
The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

Great book but could have been improved

A very good book but the book came up short for not mentioning the case of Computer Associates former executives for jiggering their financial statements to push up stock prices and paying themselves over $1.1 billion in stock options which Computer Associates later filed a lawsuit against these executives, asking for those shares back or the case of Satyam where the author of the book was sitting on the board of Satyam but failed to practice/implement the merit of transparent corporate governance that he has been preaching at Harvard Business School.

The Seller is honest.I wasn't able to use the book because it didn't have all the cases that comes with the original book. However I was able to return it for a refund without a hassle. I think the seller was suppose to specify that the book did not have the cases.

About the Author
Caryn M. Bing, RPh, MS, FASHP Caryn Marie Dellamorte Bing, RPh, MS, FASHP holds a BS from University of Illinois College of Pharmacy, an MS in Health Systems Management from Rush University, and she completed a pharmacy residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke s Medical Center in Chicago. Ms. Bing has over 25 years of practice, management, and leadership experience in alternate site pharmacy services. She is currently Corporate Clinical Services/Residency Program Manager at Critical Care Systems, a national home and specialty infusion provider. Her current responsibilities include development of clinical standards of practice and management of PGY1 Pharmacy Residency programs in five locations. Ms Bing has remained involved in professional association leadership throughout her career, and is currently the President-Elect for Nevada Society of Health-System Pharmacists. She also held leadership roles with Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists, served on the ASHP HACCP Section Executive Committee, and was Chairperson for the ASHP Continuity of Care Task Force. She has been a frequent ASHP Delegate and Alternate Delegate (IL, NV). Caryn is a Fellow of ASHP, and received the first Distinguished Service Award from the ASHP HACCP Section. Ms. Bing is Editor of Extended Stability of Parenteral Drugs. She has served on the Editorial Boards of AJHP, the Journal of Pharmacy Practice, and Perspectives in Pharmacy. She has published a number of articles and book chapters, and has presented at many state and national meetings

Amazing book, just amazing.It arrived quite quickly, vis USPS & well packed in a USPS box.
I had bought my BRILLIANT RED ATLAS 150 WELLLNESS PASTA MACHINE, without knowing how to make a variety of the Worlds Perfect Pasta Doughs.. I am astounded at the varierty of dough recipes, and the multiple step by step (breath by breath) photos helping you, hand by hand, thru the process...& giving you full page/plate photos of the finished products..You can almost see the heat rising from the plate, smell the aromas.. I cannot wait to use this book. At the time I ordered this book, I bought the LAST ONE Amazon had.

Best Cookbook for Beginner's

This book has everything a beginner could want, easy, clear instructions, lot's have how-to illustrations and a very nice selection of recipes. It covers everything pasta. I bought it used, the best $14 I have spent in years. I spent 4 yrs in Italy and traveled extensively throughout the country, still, there are sauces I never even heard of or tried. There are so many pasta and sauce recipes, I can't wait to try or that I now know how to make.I really look forward to the weekends because it's the only time I really have to try everything. Even though my kitchen is a messy disaster area by Sunday evening, I am having fun!

I love this book! I have already made several of the the pastas shown in this book, an made a few of the sauces.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the basics about pastas, an all the history behind the origins an all. I like the references, an all the information contained in this book, I truly recommend trying out this pasta book! You will be very pleased an your family will love the product of your endeavors, an knowing how to make them by hand is truly appreciated by your family when they eat your makings from this book.
