Comprehensive but poorly proofread

It provides a fairly comprehensive summary of all of the basic foundations of general medicine relevant for a physician trainee in a very compact format.

However, proof reading left a lot to be desired. At first I assumed some dyslexia on the part of the proof reader(s), APPT instead of APTT, but then some fundamental factual errors were noted.

Nowhere was this more apparent than in the epidemiology chapter. Multiple errors appeared on some pages, such as degrees of freedom in the denominator for standard deviation, basic definitions of numbers needed to treat, and definitions of positive predictive value.

At least looking out for the typos will keep you awake!!

There were over 100 pages missing from book. There is an answer section to the book which would have been very helpful. I just had my first radiology exam in dental school and when I found the pages missing I was very upset!!

Colonel Giskes reveals the whole story.

As an amateur World War II historian, I am always searching for the books that tells it like it was and I am so impressed with this book that I read it twice. Colonel Giskes was truly a professional soldier and expert counter-espionage agent. His book will set the record straight for all time regardless of whose version you read regarding SOE-MID covert operations in Northern France and Holland during the war from March 1942 thru October 1943. He was a class officer who performed his task with true professionialism. He did every thing in his power to secure the lives of the Dutch agents that fell into his trap. However the SIPO (State Police) had the final word and the agents were executed. If you call yourself a historian of World War II, you must read this book from cover to cover. Thank You

Read this, and then read London's account

Too bad this isn't in Kindle format. I'm glad it came out.

For balance, you need to read the chronicle of the other side. Its title is: From Silk To Cyanide: A Coder's War, by Leo Marks (head of codes in SEO). A very readable account of London coders, written by the coder who first suspected Giskes, but couldn't get his group to acknowledge it had lost control of so much territory. He knew it was Giskes, but they didn't want him to prove it. Two competing secret services, you see, neither wanting to lose face or funding.

Giskes had help from good old British bureacracy at its finest (or otherwise).

An amazing story

I claim no expertise in this historical episode, but it is an amazing read and ranks amongst the more compelling stories of the use of intelligence in war. Giskes really did seem to be a different sort personally as well, supported by one of the epilog documents from a dutch spy and from the story of his boss, Admiral Canaris.

Great Reference For Mechanics, Pilots and Racers

The publisher, ASA does a consistently great job with their materials.

Although the handbook is targeted to the needs of the aviation mechanic (A&P), it offers a wealth of information for pilots interested in the maintenance of their aircraft.

The topics covered include basic metallurgy, taxi signals, identification of nuts and bolts plus fittings, use of various tools,corrosion identification and management, batteries from theory to maintenance. Many helpful tables such as the battery voltage vs % charged.

The organization is excellent. The book is pocket book size but spiral bound which allows it to lay flat. Paper is heavy quality stock and easy to read.

For the pilot there are pages of illustrations to help identify parts which greatly facilitates conversations with shops.

Lots of tables including trig functions, resistor identification, drill sizes, aluminum alloys etc.

For the racer many of the practices regarding hardware, plumbing and electrical systems are very similar.

Every A/C Mechanic Must Have This Book

Although some of the information contained in this book will be common knowledge for experienced aircraft mechanics working in the field, the section on hardware such as bolts and the section on corrosion are worth the price of the book alone, even for those with experience. Every aircraft mechanic needs to have a copy of this book. This book is as essential as Kevin Carter's book concerning the A&P License and having a high-paying aviation career ([...]).

Every person working as a mechanic as well as every person interested in becoming an aircraft mechanic needs to have a copy of this book. I recently found myself without a copy, and that's when I realized its true value.

I find some of the table lacking, but the book still contains much needed information for those of us working out in the field. Do not hesitate to buy this book. You will need it.

Good Resource for Aerospace

It was suggested by our ODA administrator to get these books for the Unit Members. They have come in very handy right off the bat. Helping us get a feel for some things that might have been a little fuzzy on parts we supply to customers. Nice spiral bound edition sits flat on the desk, and makes it easy to read and compare.

heroine is pathetic and useless

I read the first two books in this series thinking to myself, surely at some point the main heroine...or female protagonist because heroine isnt the right word, maybe damsel in distress is the best description, will actually do something so I kept buying these books. Surely by the third book and all the stuff she'd gone through she'd do something to further her "abilities" that she apparently has. But no, book 3 is worse than the other two books. She spends the entire story being as useless as the other 2 books, actually shes extra pathetic and useless this book. Then the ending, I mean seriously. Im washing my hands of this mess. Maybe in book 4 she'll actually be able to take care of rescuing herself rather than have vampire boyfriend save her but whatever.

Best of the Three - A Must Read

This book was the best of the three, in my opinion. The action was nonstop, the romance was fantastic and suspense will keep you on the edge of your chair. Sexy as Hell Devereux is even better than before!

A powerful demon has set his sights on Kismet. An intriguing cast of characters come to her defense or some not so much, but the twists will keep you turning pages until the very satisfying end.

Another must read. And Lynda, is there another book? I'm hooked.

Boring.

I really liked the first book in this series. It was interesting reading about a psychologist and the dynamics of human nature ( or vampire) but find it now morphing into nothing but sex and having the Big O while having your neck bitten. Now we also have bondage. Probably won't read anything else in this series. No real plot. Just an excuse for more sex.

An inauspicious debut

According to the brief introduction by translator Jeremiah Curtin, In Vain was the first published novel by Nobel Laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz, written when he was only 18 years old. Originally published in 1876 under the Polish title of Na marne, Curtin’s English edition did not come out until 1899, after Sienkiewicz had achieved some worldwide renown as the author of romantic epics like Quo Vadis and “The Trilogy” (With Fire and Sword, The Deluge, and Pan Wolodyjowski). In Vain is no epic, but it is definitely romantic, in the 19th-century sense of the word. Curtin describes the book as a portrait of student life, and that’s certainly how it starts out, but not how it ends.

A young man named Yosef Shvarts (Curtin always opts for phonetic spellings of Polish proper nouns) arrives in Kiev to attend school. He runs into an old hometown friend, Gustav, and the two decide to room together. Yosef is the son of a blacksmith, so although he is lucky to be able to attend school, money is scarce and he must live frugally. The two friends hang out at a student club with a group of schoolmates who share their bohemian lifestyle. Gustav is in love with Helena, an attractive widow who has been traumatized by the death of her husband and child. Upon meeting Yosef, however, she immediately becomes obsessed with him because he reminds her of her deceased husband. Needless to say, this doesn’t sit well with Gustav and causes a great deal of tension between the two roommates.

Meanwhile, Yosef falls in love with science and studies to become a doctor, but that element of the narrative is neglected in favor of the love story. The novel harkens back to an earlier and far more conservative age when kissing a woman was as good as a marriage proposal (although at times it’s hinted, ever so subtly, that there’s more than just kissing going on). Men of a certain class were expected to conduct themselves honorably in all things, like the knights of old. To play games with a woman’s virtue would spell the end of one’s reputation as a gentleman. Under such restrictive conventions of romance, Yosef finds himself in a quandary between love and duty.

The first half of the book is very engaging. The depiction of student life in Kiev is interesting, and the characters and their relationships are intriguing. Eventually, however, the novel regresses into a rather formulaic he-loves-me, he-loves-me-not story, reminiscent of some of the fairy tale romances that are more at home in Sienkiewicz’s historical epics. The character of Augustinovich, a friend and confidant of Yosef’s, even resembles The Trilogy’s Falstaffian character Pan Zagloba in his sense of humor, his gregariousness, and his propensity for meddling in others’ love lives.

In Vain is not a terrible book, but it may be the worst piece of work I’ve ever read from this excellent author. Only diehard fans of Sienkiewicz should give this one a try.
