An Omnibus Edition of Three Classic Early Novels from the Critically Acclaimed Author of Cloudsplitter and Affliction
Family Life: Russell Banks's first novel is an adult fairy tale of a royal family in a mythical contemporary kingdom where the myriad dramas of domesticity blend with an outrageous slew of murders, mayhem, coups, debauches, world tours, and love in all guises, transcendent or otherwise.
Hamilton Stark: This tale of a solitary, boorish, misanthropic New Hampshire pipe fitter—the sole inhabitant of the house from which he evicted his own mother—is at once a compelling meditation on identity and a thoroughly engaging story of life on the cold edge of New England.
The Relation of My Imprisonment: Utilizing a form invented by imprisoned seventeenth-century Puritan divines—an utterly sincere and detailed, if highly artificial, recounting of great suffering—Banks's novel is a remarkably inventive, lovingly good-humored argument, exploration, and map of the caged religious mind.

Typical Banks
By William T. Prince
I love Russell Banks, and I love these three stories. Family Life is my least favorite, and Hamilton Stark is fantastic. Obviously The Relation of My Imprisonment falls in between. Overall, though, they are typical Banks. It's certainly interesting to read his early works, and his preface alone is worth seven bucks (although it's available for free in "Look inside"). Do these stories measure up to his later works? Well, no, probably not. But it's extremely rare for any author's early works to measure up to what he or she writes thirty or forty years later. Assessed in the proper context, these rate five stars--certainly a solid nine out of ten. Banks' plots are always top-notch, but more importantly, his characters are always compelling--not always likable people, of course, but always interesting. Character development is Banks' forte, so if you prefer character-driven stories, you should love Russell Banks. To be clear, however, his plots are never weak.
Here's a recommendation: Continental Drift remains my favorite novel of all time and one of very, very few that I've read more than once. (There are too many good books out there to reread anything but the absolute best.) Whether or not you're familiar with Banks, you should check out Continental Drive. It's the book that made me love Russell Banks, and it's a big reason why he's my favorite author.

No Innards to Outer
By Sandi Kay Wheatley
This early effort of Russell Banks was not for me despite the fact that I respect some of his later writing. In fact, if I'd run into it first I would never had read anything else by him. Pretentious, false, and posturing - it's a hard slog. The three tales in the book are quite different in mood, changing from a fake, overly arch fairy tale to what Banks may have considered deeply personal lit and character study. I found everything tedious except the pages which were devoted to a title or chapter heading.

Not What I Expected
By Sandra G. Donahue
I love Russell Banks' later writings, but in this collection of his earlier works, he is still a work-in-progress in my opinion. To be fair, I have not yet tried the last of the three, and I will, when I don't have anything better to read. Sorry, Russell.
